Impossible to watch

I'm on my second attempt and at 30 minutes in I'm still waiting for the story to begin.

reply

Oh, it's a great film alright. And much easier to watch multiple times than fun but one-note BABY JANE.

reply

Sorry but this movie doesn't hold a candle to Baby Jane.

reply

Oh, Charlotte's way better, I agree.

You are an imbecile.

reply

While I think Baby Jane is the better made movie technically I just enjoy the Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte so much more, the beautiful black and white photography, the interior of Hollus House, Bette Davis having us believing she is mad or is she ? the subtly evil Miriam played by Olivia De Havilland, the loyal house maid played by Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor as Jewel Mayhew subtly pouring tea on the verandah for Cecil Kellaway as she is dying. All 4 women are fantastic in this movie and there is so much going on that the film never lags, the final scene when Charlotte receives the letter from Harry and then is driven away is Bette at her best, she didn't require any dialogue, her facial expressions were all that was needed to pull off one of her finest scenes.

reply

Bette Davis always flawless but this movie was a huge drag for me.

reply

It's the Attack of the Crawford Queens once again!

reply

lol you are such a pathetic fvking moron, not my fault your favorite movie sucks.

reply

The idea of Olivia De Havilland as the villain really threw me. I have trouble with the idea of Dick VanDyke as the villain in Night at the Museum (somehow using both of those sentences in the same post seems blasphemous). Same thing with James Stewart in Another Thin Man... it just crushes me!

Oh, CHARLOTTE is far more haunting than JANE. And more layered.

CHARLOTTE's only real flaw is that the 1927 prologue party blew the period garb and coifs.

Then why is Baby Jane rated higher? Hush drags too much. With the levels that Bette played in JANE, I don't see it as one note

reply

Then why is Baby Jane rated higher?

Oh, the Crawford queens. They're like Hitler and Charlie Manson fans!

reply

well, I don't know. The critics weren't known for being Crawford queens. It's a good film, where Baby Jane is very good one.

reply

Well, if you're going to count stuff as evidence of superiority, CHARLOTTE got more Oscar nominations.

reply

well when you get down to it, Oscar noms depend on which year the film(s) was made. It makes it somewhat meaningless in that respect.

Any more meaningless than IMDb rankings?

reply

I don't pay attention to imdb rankings, which is a relatively new thing. The point is that if every film was released in a different year, we'd have a different set of winners (except for those really extraordinary winners/nominees that would have won in any year)

But you said:

Then why is Baby Jane rated higher?

But you said:

'Then why is Baby Jane rated higher?'
-----------------
Yes, in film critics' books. BabyJane universally receives 3 1/2* and HUSh somewhat less. I think Baby Jane resonates more with the human condition, and is a "warmer" film, more relatable.

reply

I hope you don't say next that you value Rotten Tomato ratings.

reply

I prefer Charlotte to Baby Jane. There's more to it; an "experimental" energy in it; so many subplots; strolling in the graveyard, as it were. It goes daringly over the top, yet it lands on its feet. Not every single g-damned little plot point is explained. Mysteries remain, but this is true in life also. Charlotte is likely way too damaged (I hesitate to say crazy) to live in the real world (but then did she ever, really?), but she'll probably spend the rest of her life in what one nowadays call an assisted living community, called by another name; and no, not a "madhouse". They'll likely grant her freedom of movement, not put her in a cell, or if they do, just to help calm her down. She may even recover, recover as much as she can, and spend what time she has left in a state of serenity that shall be new to her. This is what I would wish for her if she was a real person.

___________
It also took me 2 attempts, to get past the first 30mins and into the film. It was attempting to build up a shocker of an opening and be atmospheric and noirish; but something about it, didn't appear intriguing or compelling enough. Superficial and phoney maybe??? It was worth sitting through and enjoyed it by the end; but I find BABY JANE enjoyable and fun, right from the start.

reply

Oh Baby Jane is incredible from the get go. This movie I still don't even know what happened.

reply

Watch it again and, this time, pay attention.

"If I don't suit chu, you kin cut mah thoat!"

reply

I do want to see it again

reply

It's worth getting thru the prologue and into Mirriam's arrival just to see the first dinner scene w/Charlotte's great lines to Mirriam.

reply

WEhich is the line? I don't even remember.

reply

After Drew and Mirriam tell Charlotte she has to leave the house:

"What do you think ah called you here for? COMPANY"

"Do yew think ah asked you here just to....just to BE WITH ME?"

"Oh I know, now let me see, What was it you called your job? Public Relations? Sounds like somethin' Pretty DIRTY to me!"

"You're a VILE sorry little BITCH!"

reply

lol I don't remember.

reply

I agree it's no Baby Jane, but this is still a good film.

reply

How about watching 30 minutes at a time?

reply

Hang in there. The explosions and helicopter chases start at around an hour.
