Harry could have rescued Charlotte much sooner. **SPOILER!**

***SPOILER ALERT*** I find it not entirely believable that Harry chose to honor Jewel’s wishes and not open the letter before her death. It seemed clear enough that he already smelled a dirty rat and suspected Charlotte was not John’s killer. And he obviously had no reservations about poking his nose into people’s affairs. So why wouldn’t he have followed his hunches, gone ahead and opened the letter, learned the truth, and revealed Jewel, Miriam and Drew as the real villains? In so doing, he could have prevented Charlotte from committing murder and winding up in a sanitarium, on trial, or wherever she was being hauled off to.

But alas, they didn't ask me to write the screenplay, ha-ha. And granted, such a change in plot would have torpedoed the rest of the movie. But i'm just saying! :-)

But enough about that — I really enjoyed this movie. A Crawford-Davis reunion and all its oozing venom would have been a sinful treat to watch, but I think De Havilland was admirably despicable as Crawford’s replacement. It also was cool to see Bruce Dern and George Kennedy in early movie roles. Some combinations of actors are just really interesting — throw a bunch of names in a hat, pull two out, and see what happens. Bette Davis and George Kennedy in the same scene? Yep, there they were on the big screen together.

Fun film!

If he had done that though, Jewel would have been arrested. I'm sure he would have figured out another way to save Charlotte without giving up Jewel. She deserved to die in peace. Miriam made her suffer enough!

Jewel suffered enough??? The woman was a murderer - and she completely ruined Charlotte's life letting the town think she was the killer. I despise Jewel even more than Miriam. I would have loved to have seen her fry in this movie - and Charlotte bringing marshmellows to toast!!

I agree with you. Harry is presented as a genial old sort but he's really just a sh***y journalist who doesn't really care how this all turns out, certainly not for poor Charlotte. And what's to say Jewel wouldn't outlive him? She may have had a "bad heart" and been at death's door but plenty of people live for years and even decades in that condition and Harry was no spring chicken himself he could have dropped before she would. It's the main reason I don't really like him in this movie.

You're right of course, but still I'm right about his intentions - he could care less about what happens to Charlotte.

As others have said Harry had no genuine concern for Charlotte. He was just one of many people who were exploiting her vulnerability. It can be viewed that he did a good deed in giving Charlotte the letter of confession which seemed to finally give her peace of mind, yet I feel it would have been better for Harry to spread the letter through the media to let the town know the truth.

I'll agree.
