First movie of its kind??

The concept of a bunch of greedy relatives trying to drive someone insane in a "haunted house" setting has been done a thousand times. Was Hush Hush the first one??

reply

Not necessarily the first per se --- such subject matter, it could be argued, had been done before in different formats and contexts. But rarely as hauntingly or as grandly as CHARLOTTE (such that the film's title has become something of a metaphor for shrouded, small-town mystery and hidden scandal).

Also, it's hard to remove CHARLOTTE from its place in time: the haunted, PSYCHO/TwilightZone-y, Cold War, end-of-the-world era of the early-1960s when we came our closest to nuclear obliteration (and knew it) and JFK had just been killed under highly-suspicious circumstances, and the culture was about to change (if not break down) markedly after we crossed that thick black line which bifurcated the decade and almost the century.

As Charlotte is whisked away and turns to gaze with tragic nostalgia out the back window of the vehicle at the home she has occupied all her life and is now leaving forever, the old world is going with her.

So you can see it as a metaphor (not that people viewed it that way at the time, but it totally works).

You are seriously psychotic.

You seem to lack substance. Ever consider a career in politics?

This movie had nothing to do with the political climate at the time. The "Southern Gothic" and "Psycho Biddy" genres were all the rage at the time; this movie merely capitalized on their popularity.

You seem very literal. Does that mean you have no sense of perspective -- who's to say?

But the early-'60s horror movie vibe was absolutely the result of what was going on in the world at the time. The "psycho biddy" genre was just a subset of the horror genre of the era -- and there's a reason many people consider the '60s to be the best decade for horror.

Well, if we're gonna.....

I think that Velma was a lesbian. And a skanky one at that. Miriam called her out, "Is my cousin one of your thingggssss....???" Plus her comment to Dr. Drew about her fetish when it came to Charlotte.

Here we go: injecting politics into everything and everyone that ever existed and ever will exist. Yes, don't tell me: this film must be a "liberal" or "republican" one or made by the aforementioned, blah, blah.
Same thing on any random board.

No one said anything about "liberals" or "republicans" as it relates to CHARLOTTE at all --- the potential end of the world is a bigger issue than that.

Or is the end of the world political?

Besides, InherentlyYours/SimpleMindedSociety, repetitive behavior all across IMDb is hardly a topic you want to bring up.

You're soooooo passive-aggressive that you even fight with yourself!

BTW: if you get this post deleted, I will only re-post it.

Oooh.."passive-aggressive", another buzzword used in a pinch by people for deflection. You sound like a real flamboyant one.

Really, is there a reason to have it deleted? You did something wrong? You seem paranoid. Naturally you would repost any self-written post. It's not like you have any respect for IMDb or it's policies (you never have during your long run of different user-names)

Ask the the nearest mental hospital that question and use Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte as an example.

No, sorry, but the term "passive-aggressive" refers to something REAL and just because you consider it to be jargon (and if you have a problem with jargon that is YOUR problem and you need to OWN your little problem) doesn't necessarily mean that it is a "buzzword" (and, btw, "buzzword" seems to be YOUR buzzword AND you use it AD NASEUM!) and that people should refrain from using words that bug lil ole you.

Oh, and as far as "deflection" goes, you are the master. Just take a look at what you just did. Or, rather, what you DIDN'T do... You didn't respond to that user's main comments! No, you DEFLECTED!!! Ha! Outsmarted yourself again, DIDN'T YA???

"Flamboyant"??? I'm going to leave that one alone.

Oh, and politics exist EVERYWHERE... I don't usually care to get into that area much myself, but to say that the political climate of the time has no influence on culture is asinine and incorrect in the extreme. Oh, I'm sorry, you probably want to tell me that "asinine" is a "buzzword". Well, you can choke on my "buzzword".

By the way... I could write an essay (a REALLY well-written one 😀) on how the tv shows "Bewitched" & "I Dream of Jeannie", "The Munsters" & "The Addams Family" were all a result of their time, political, social and otherwise, but I'm not in the mood.

InherentlyYours is one of the most infamous posters on all of IMDb (and ubiquitous, as there's barely a page you won't find him on at some point).

He's intelligent, and perceptive to a point, but takes multiple sides of the same issue (and, no, that's not about being able to see varying perspectives, it's about being -- yes -- passive-aggressive) and then dropped his previous ID last August for some reason, before switching to his current profile.

(I've changed my name, but not my account, the accusatory projection of others to the contrary).

And, yep, he routinely tries to get posts that take him on deleted, and sometimes succeeds when the moderator isn't paying proper attention to what's happening.

He also tends to ignore people he dismisses as dumb (often rightly) or unable to converse, but instead goes after (and sometimes follows around) people who "challenge" him by calling him on his 24/7 junk (often rightly).

And that, too, is pretty darned political.

As far as I know, it was the first major motion picture to show a hand being meat-cleavered off. The de-capitation of Dern really wasn't shown, just suggested. I saw it in 1964 and the audience went nuts--a lot of horrified sounds. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. I saw it again in the nineties, and that scene that had horrified me at age 12...looked fake. Any others with similar reaction?

reply

Yes. Story ideas did not come out until the 60s.
