Indiana Jones and That Man From Rio

Ever since I first saw "That Man From Rio" I was struck by the similarities to the later Indiana Jones movies, particularly "Raiders" and "Temple of Doom." I'd always wondered if Steven Spielberg had been influenced by it. I think that question has finally been answered. As stated in a NY Times article about the new Blu-ray DVD (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/26/movies/homevideo/jet-setting-in-that-man-from-rio-and-chain-reactions-in-the-way-things-go.html):

"Steven Spielberg reportedly wrote to [Philippe] de Broca [the director] telling him that he’d seen it nine times."

So many elements in the Indy movies seem borrowed from this one: the pursuit of stolen artifacts, the jungle setting, the whirlwind action, the hero trying to fly a plane though he's never done it, the kid sidekick ...

Roland Barthes cited the movie repeatedly in a 1964 interview on semiology and cinema, and Steven Spielberg reportedly wrote to de Broca telling him that he’d seen it nine times.

Yes, I always suspected that Spielberg was inspired by this film.

And "Rio" is basically a Tin-Tin comic as feature film.

Felt the same thing. Seen this four times. It's such a breezy fun adventure flick.
