DVD is out - here's my review


Hamlet At Elsinore was released on Region 1 DVD just over a month ago. I reviewed it at the Shakespeare website I write for:

This is indeed a fascinating version. Every other Hamlet I've seen goes for a more organic look, with the characters playing off each other to develop the plot. Philip Saville instead uses lots of closeups, which isolate the characters and concentrate their emotions. It brings surprise after surprise.

The final shot was the best and most tragic, bar none, that I have seen.

BTW, I don't agree with it. I think this version of Hamlet is miserable. Robert Shaw as Claudius is quite good, but the rest is dog meat. Plummer was a BIG disappointment. I'll write more in my own post.
