I was surprised to find out that...

...Edward G. Robinson the actor who played the character of Simon Nurdlinger (the chief milk company) was actually born in Romania ( my country). Well, not a native
Romanian, but a Jewish born in Romania. Many Jews left Romania at different moments in history, some of them got to USA and had succesful carriers (like this Edward G. Robinson).

reply

Perhaps he left because although he was born in Romania becuse he was Jewish he cannot be identified as a native Romanian? Depressing to know that intolerance continues as usual in eastern Europe.

reply

It's a pity that some people can misunderstand written things...

I have only written what I discovered...he was born in Romania and his nationality was Jewish (things written on imdb.com). So...only facts, no case of intolerance.

reply

I enjoyed seeing Robinson in a light role for a change!

reply

I agree. His portrayal of Mr. Nurdlinger is actually one of my favorites out of all he did. To call him a good actor is a severe understatement.

reply

Being Jewish is an ethnicity, not a nationality.

Rome. By all means, Rome.

Yeah. Like Sammy Davis, Jr..... no, waitaminute...

People is people. Princes are princes and creeps are creeps. What church, what color, what belief or where from doesn't make the difference.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

That's true in America. But in lots of Europe, Jewish is a nationality, and being born Jewish makes you "not a native" of the country of your birth. They record your "foreign" nationality on your birth certificate. Still just like in Germany before WW2. Case in point, Edward G. Robinson was born well before the state of Israel even existed, and he was born in Romania, but he is still considered not a native of Romania, but a "native" of Israel ???!!! I'm glad I'm an American Jew.

reply

Well...as far as I know, being born in a country you get a citizenship from that state. In this case, he got a Romanian citizenship. But if the parents were Jews living in Romania, he was also a Jew (as nationality).

Judaism is the religion and Jewish is the nationality (own country and state for Jewish people is Israel), in my view...

I am sure that there are atheists among Jewish people, like in every national group...

Concluding, great actor and he was born in Romania ...:)

I'm not sure this is always the case. It is true in the US, but I live in Belgium and I think here you get the citizenship from your parents (or either of them if they're different).

Also, being Jewish is an ethnicity, not a nationality. Here in Belgium live lots of Jews who are Belgian citizens. Citizens of Israel are Israelis (source: CIA factbook).
