Gold

Maybe this is an aside, but what is the point of hoarding all that gold in Fort Know where it just sits and can't be used anyway? And gold has no intrinsic value to begin with?

reply

I never quite understood what he was trying to accomplish.

reply

Apparently his gold would be worth more. But try to use any gold you would be suspect.

reply

It used to be that the paper money printed was backed up by the gold, which had value. Not the case anymore.

Gold has value based on markets, though, and while I agree, that's not "intrinsic", then we're into the whole bizarre thing in economics where "value" is "what people pay for it".

You're right in your reply elsewhere: Goldfinger's scheme was to irradiate Fort Knox's gold supply, driving up the value of his own supply on the market.

But I think a lot of his plan was motivated by just wanting more. It wasn't that he had any practical use for the money, he just wanted more and he wanted others to have less. In one stroke here, he could devalue the property of others and (relative to them) acquire more, more, more.
