How many of you didn't know Gert Frobe's voice, because of his heavy accent, was dubbed by an Englishman? I didn't discover this until several years ago, and was shocked! Altho not as much as the thug in the beginning...
shareI never realized it watching the movie. It's one of the best dubbing jobs the series ever did. Frobe's mouth seems to always be in sync with the words being spoken. It's so natural. I learned about the dubbing from external sources.
shareThis has always puzzled me somewhat as Gert Frobe here sounds just like Gert Frobe in every other movie he did- he had a distinctive voice so I can only presume that the overdub actor impersonated Frobe's voice too which I find a bit unlikely.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
From what i understand in the extras on the Blu-ray, then Gert Frobe did not speak a word english, so instead he spoke phonetic english and was then dubbed to understandable english.
But you do notice after the Blu-ray release, that they do make dubbing errors a few times. One of the very noticeable, is when Bond is strapped to the table and the laser beam is comming closer and closer.
What you can notice on Frobe at one point, is that the dubbing ends before his lips stops moving.
Are you kidding me? It was SO noticeable.
shareI just watched a making-of documentary of the movie and Guy Hamilton says he (Gert Frobe) did not even speak a word of english but he wanted Gert because his acting was perfect for the character.
shareI didn't know this fact until I was listening to the director's audio commentary track on the DVD a couple weeks ago. I was shocked. Now I need to google that actor's real voice to see what they are talking about. For a movie as old as it is, it's amazing they did such a good job dubbing it. Even modern movies/shows that are dubbed can be blatenly obvious, but in Goldfinger it's not obvious, at least not to me and I don't see many complaints about it online. Even on Seinfeld, a very modern show with a moderately high budget mid-run, did a bad job dubbing a French accent in the French woman Jerry hits on in "The Wife" when he offers to pay for her dry cleaning because she couldn't afford it. You can tell she's dubbed because her lip movements don't match the words. And that was in the mid-90's. Goldfinger was made in the 60's before the digital age. I'm quite impressed. The Bond franchise is awesome!

Well they had as much time as they needed in the recording booth to make a clean recording while playing the film back for the voice actor.
It's called ADR - and it's used a lot more often than you'd think. Much of the time, the actual audio recorded on the set is unusable due to loud fans blowing wind on the set, vehicle engines, grips running around with power cables, the camera itself, and a variety of other inadvertent noises. Good films don't use much of the set recording at all - but they do use it as a reference in order to sync up the audio to the motion of the actors' mouths later on.
You must have a tin ear. I can easily pick up a voice that was actually recorded on location versus one that was recorded in a sound booth. I knew his voice was dubbed for the whole movie without even having it confirmed first. Now, did I know that it was ANOTHER actor that did it? No. But I knew his voice during filming was not being used.

Oh, you have such a talent for distinguishing dubbed voices from those recorded on location. We're all so impressed. You didn't know Gert Frobe's voice was dubbed until you heard it from an external source. Just like the rest of us. You can say otherwise all you want and be condescending all you want to those of us who "didn't notice the obvious" , but I'm not buying it.

One thing I did notice in looking at some scenes is that the Goldfinger actor is always shot alone when he is speaking.
That's not true. You see him talking to Bond, Pussy, the gangsters, and several other characters all the time. He's never in a shot alone when he's talking.
shareGo look the movie again. The main characters are in the scene together. When GF talks, they cut away to frame him talking without the other main character's head(s) in the scene. Often he points or motions.
shareThey did a lot of looping and dubbing in early Bond movies, the trivia from Dr. No said this "Joseph Wiseman, the only early Bond villain not to have his voice dubbed by another actor" I was surprised to learn even Eunice Grayson voice was dubbed, and she is an English actress.

shareThat doesn't surprise me. They did that with the first bond girl in Dr. No. That was more understandable though because the whole purpose of the Bond girl's are their looks, but why with a main villain? Couldn't they have just found a different guy? Or teach him some English? Seems pointless.
sharemany in the earlier flicks were dubbed, goldfinger's voice changes to quite sounding evil and dark at times, what diverse great dubbing, like when he parts with bond, who gets locked up by the end, notice how vicious he sounds. many have this as their ultimate favorite bond flick, while critics often refer to "on her majesty's secret service" as the best, that movie has my favorite soundtrack. this movie has quite many funny iconic lines, of course there is the most famous one "do you expect me to talk?", after honor blackman's role has introduced herself by name getting the reply "i must be dreaming", "he's quite mad you know.", funny connery is so young here both miss moneypenny and the bond girl are older than him, i think i remember reading connery picked up his golf interest after the scene on the golf course with goldfinger in this. there were several actors from the first movies suppose to be a part of the continuation of the franchise, like jack lord from "dr. no" and sylvia trench who appeared in the first two movies. i was so surprised to read somewhere that the movie made after this, "thunderball", was the biggest bond success, i can only make sense of that by the reasoning of the popularity by this giving the franchise a major boost, not one have i heard refer to "thunderball" as one of their favorites, i always found it connery's most boring bond movie and even the movie makers admitted the underwater scenes were dragging on too long. the scene where goldfinger starts firing against his own men to save himself was quite similar to what max zorin did in the mine in "a view to a kill".
