I do wonder had Sylvia trench returned I wonder if her role would have been the same as in the first toe films or be given an expanded role.

It was intended that James Bond and Sylvia Trench's shagging would be interrupted at the start of Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice before she became the Bond girl in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

It's probably a good thing that didn't happen since the joke was already boring in Dr No.

She wasn't specifically supposed to be the Bond girl in OHMSS, just in the 6th film of the series. At the time OHMSS wasn't going to be the 6th film in the series. It was actually supposed to be the 4th but got pushed back by Thunderball, then it was supposed to be 5th but a mild winter in Switzerland meant there wasn't enough snow so they did YOLT.

What if the sixth was OHMSS anyway and she wasn't axed?

I guess they either would have pushed back OHMSS again so that they could do the Sylvia movie, or they would have made OHMSS and replaced Tracy with Sylvia.

Well her character got cut completely. I doubt that they were wavering between cutting her character vs making it a bigger role. If she had managed to make it into this movie it would have been a small role like the previous ones.
