Why did they abandon Sylvia Trench?

I really enjoy the concept of Sylvia Trench popping up in every entry and ALMOST getting together with James before he gets called away on a new mission. I'm disappointed that Terrance Young scrapped the idea.

Any idea why? All I can find says that he's the one who abandoned the idea, but not why he abandoned it.

I guess they decided Bond should be completely detached from any kind of commitments. Too bad too; I always liked her. A positively portrayed sexually aggressive woman in early '60s movies is a rarity.

reply

The actress who played her was arrested for shop lifting.

reply

I always assumed it was down to the change in director for Goldfinger

reply

Terence Young didn't direct Goldfinger.

reply

No,no. Shop lifting. it was a big news story at the time. Ruined her career.

Missed out on Goldfinger, but proved to be light-fingered.🐭

or Sticky Fingered.

Here's my guess:

1) Its hard to portray him as a romantic handsome man if hes technically cheating on every woman that he meets and has a fling with. It would be a weird dynamic if they forced this relationship and made it seem too serious.

2) Many of the movies start with him hooking with some other woman, usually at some exotic locale and related to some offscreen mission that he just finished. Having him get whisked away from these scenes accomplishes about the same thing that a Sylvia Trench scene at the start of every movie would, but with the benefit of not having to maintain the Trench character every movie and allowing those scenes to take place in more interesting locations than his apartment in England.

You don't have to make a guess, it's a fact that the actress was done for shop lifting and no producer would touch her after that.

Im talking more to why they didnt continue the character with a different actress when they cut this one. Theyve had tons of recurring characters played by multiple actors, so it woukdnt be strange

Fair enough.
