Audic Goldfinger

Anyone else just didn't find him impressive? Sure, his henchman killed people with a hat but Goldfinger himself was just a fat guy in a suit obsessed with gold. Pretty generic compared Dr No, Rosa Klebb and most of the villains that came after.

I thought he was terrifying (I was six when I first saw it but stil have that residual fear and loathing of him). He's a nasty, nasty man, totally devoid of empathy, humour and humanity.

As a villain, yes, I see your point - he would be very easily taken out, I'm sure. But the way he treated Bond, his ruthlessness complete lack of compassion or just plain NICENESS towards anyone in the movie, really chilled me.

I'd debate you on only one point: that Goldfinger was devoid of humor.

I recall nary a witty line from Dr. No, Rosa Klebb, Red Grant, Emilio Largo or Ernst Blofeld among the first batch of Sean Connery's outings as Bond, but if Goldfinger had one thing going for him personality-wise, it was his morbidly droll sense of humor.

Yes, now that I think about it, you're right - it was a mean sense of humour, not one to be shared but for his amusement alone. He was also, of course, responsible for one of the funniest, most infamous lines in movie history - "No, Mr Bond, I expect you to die!"

reply

Yes, that was the one foremost in my mind. And his crack about Solo having "a pressing engagement" is a perfect example of being for his amusement alone. Out of all the villains of the first, shall we say, "set" of Bond films, A.G.'s the one from whom I get the biggest kick.

It's Auric Goldfinger.

Yes, Auric - something to do with the Periodic Table of the Elements? (Gold is "Au"). What chance did he have with a first and second name like that?
