when we were kids you were the sun to which my eyes would not adjust

Chills, looking at that.

That moment made me re-watch the film. Up until that point, I was bored to tears, then Gertrud in the mirror, a hypnagogic hallucination, Gertrud in the mind's eye, is she even real to these men, is she real to us, all-of-a-sudden I realized I missed out on a masterwork, re-watched Gertrud the next day, utterly transfixed.

The link doesn't work anymore but from the poster above, I presume it's the time when Gabriel contemplates the "rococo" mirror and lights the candles that surround it and Gertrud shows up on the mirror. If it is so, I would definitely agree!

Another image burned in my mind is the triangle of unrequited stares later, when Gabriel is bidding them farewell and Gertrud looks to the floor, Gabriel looks to Gertrud and Gustav looks to Gabriel. The theme of isolation and incommunicability is explored thoroughly on many occasions throughout the film but I think that it is on that scene that it crystallises perfectly.

-You won't forget me now?

-No. I've got nobody else to remember.
