Shocked at the Sight and Sound listing

After seeing Passion of Joan of Arc, Vampyr, Day of Wrath and especially Ordet, I view Dreyer as one of the greatest directors of all-time. I was very excited to see this and when I saw its rating on Sight and Sound I assumed it would be amazing. It feels like a casting call and a how-to on framing shots. The story is repetitive and boring and the acting is non-existent. Aside from the message, the only saving grace and the only reason I liked it, was the beautiful framing of nearly every shot. For me, a five star rating is the equivalent of a low 3 out of 5, so don't harass me for the low rating. The film is painfully boring and to be honest, I do believe some of that is intentional. The idea she is trapped in this never ending game is monotonous for her, but pushing that onto the viewer is risky. I doubt this was well received when it debuted, but much like many "great" films, it endured and was refound over and over. Obviously, being his last film, the details are what most probably loved. I just can't love a movie for how it's made, there needs to be some entertainment.

I thought it was rather bold of Dreyer to shoot the film as he did. He was apparently very confident in his actors and the material, choosing as he did to not add any visual flair. However I'm not sure that confidence was well-founded.

Do you think he might have tried to recreate the effects of Ordet?

I recently read that Gertrud was made many years later and his last film. Might his style been to copy of what worked in Ordet....almost flawlessly. Where the actors stood, as if on stage and faced the audience?

The man is an absolute genius, but this movie just didn't work for me
