Does anyone else thing Walter should've smacked Catherine for her obnoxious and overbearing attitude?

He's nice enough to rescue her and the girls yet she takes over his hut and starts bossing him around including disposing of his whiskey. The girls seem to take on her same bossy attitude.

I've seen this movie plenty of times but I always find her so bloody annoying. Maybe it would've been different with a different actress but for me, her character simply is aggravating.

Leslie Caron (Catherine) has done a perfect job in acting a character that almost everyone hates. I have first watched the movie with a girlfriend of mine and she said that Cary should spank Leslie, lol. Maybe their marriage is supposed to include a lot of spankings, actually, even though it's quite vaguely implied. :-)

She's French! Ever dated a French woman? It's an experience, I can tell you. And besides, Leslie Caron was so beautiful, how could Cary Grant resist her.

What?? Are u talking about the same person? I liked her - Leslie Caron is one of my favourite actresses!!! I love her accent, it is so funny.

Sure she acts quite posh and maybe a bit snobby but that is what makes the film funny - the contrast between her and him (the fact that she is very prim and proper and he acts very casual and laidback).

I actually thought she was very likeable.

I loved her performance. She was a perfect "Miss Goody Two-Shoes". She was excellent.

I absolutely hated that character! She was continually obnoxious, at least to me.

I didn't like her at first, but she started to grow on me as the movie progressed, esp. in the drunk scene when she revealed her background, thus explaining her stuffiness and being an etiquette junkie even out in the middle of nowhere. =P

No I really like her because she's opinionated but I think personally that is a guard to protect herself and then I think she does it to wing him up and maybe also to show that she likes him a bit.

I hated her throughout the entire movie. She acts like she's in a palace or something and was almost completely oblivious that a freaking war was taking place. Every scene she was in was like nails on a chalk board; even the scene where she drank made me want to hurt her. The little girls were annoying until around the drunk snake bite scene where they started to be nice to him.

I also thought she was annoying. I loved the little kids and Cary Grant but she just seemed there to annoy him. The part that bugged me the most is when she gets bit by the snake and starts drinking because its ok under the circumstances but heaven forbid he drinks when he wants. Do as I say, not as I do. Even though she was pretty it doesn't excuse her for being so strict and abrasive. If she's doing some of those things to show she likes him, the last time I saw such immature acts of someone liking someone else I was in elementary school. To show his affection back he should punch her, pull her hair then run away giggling.

I thought she was very annoying. I kept hoping some cannibals from a nearby island would show up and take her away. Mr. Eckland could show his appreciation by giving the cannibals some barbeque sauce.

Great comment! I just think he should throw in some cole slaw.

When I was a kid, I saw this with my sister, and we just roared. She passed away a few years later--car accident--, so I remember it with fondness. Yeah, we hated Catherine, too, but over the years I made my peace with it. I think our favorite line came when they were fishing with their hands in the lagoon:

Walter: "Here she comes..."
Catherine: "How do you know it's a 'she?'
Walter: "Her mouth is open."

Never been a Caron fan, however. CBS Reporter Charles Kuralt was on assignment to cover a revolution in the Congo and had several times almost been shot. He and a BBC colleague got their story, escaped with their lives, and made it to Paris. He checked into a hotel and slept for two days, woke up one morning and staggered out onto his balcony. On the very next balcony was Leslie Caron. He said, "Good morning, Miss Caron," whereupon she gave him a dirty look and disappeared into her room. Oh, well...
