I think an actor would be a fool trying to out act Archie in a re-make. I think that this story would be fun to be told without the restrictions on the filmmakers of that time. I am not talking about nudity or sex scenes; I am saying that the film has so many angles that weren't explored because of limitations of the time.
Tom Hanks, Kevin Kline, and Anthony Hopkins would put a great spin on Walter Eckland, they would be completely different but all would be credible and entertaining. Neither would challenge the other man's or Cary Grant's performances and I think they would enjoy seeing what each other did with the role.
Imagine if Walter Eckland was black and instead of fleeing "educational oppression" he was fleeing real oppression, Denzel Washington would probably be cast but I think that Don Cheadle could do awesome things in this role, even if he is a little young. Could you imagine the uproar in 1964 if an "uppity negro" fell in love with a diplomat's daughter while living on an isolated tropical island with 7 little white girls?
I agree with you that the film shouldn't be copied. The thing I was trying to say is that this film has potential to be remade and stand on it's own merits. I wouldn't even call it Father Goose but the heart of the story would be the same.
