I would love to see a remake of this film

I would love to see this film remade and I think Tom Hanks would be the perfect Walter. I see him in A League Of Their Own and think he could do justice to the role but I struggle to think of the Female lead. I think Meg Ryan is a little "long in the tooth for this one".

It could also made pretty cheaply because the zero fighter, Japanese Ship, Australian mine sweeper and the Yacht are the only period machines.

What do yall think? If you don't think Tom Hanks would be a good Walter, then who would you suggest.

I just don't think that any actor today can take the place of Cary Grant in any movie! He was in a class of his own. Who could play such a nasty looking man who really is so handsome & sexy.. IMO a remake would be a poor second to this movie & I feel that was about every Cary Grant movie. Whatever move he was in,he shined in & made the movie his own. Who does that today? I think todays male actors pale in comparison.

I think an actor would be a fool trying to out act Archie in a re-make. I think that this story would be fun to be told without the restrictions on the filmmakers of that time. I am not talking about nudity or sex scenes; I am saying that the film has so many angles that weren't explored because of limitations of the time.

Tom Hanks, Kevin Kline, and Anthony Hopkins would put a great spin on Walter Eckland, they would be completely different but all would be credible and entertaining. Neither would challenge the other man's or Cary Grant's performances and I think they would enjoy seeing what each other did with the role.

Imagine if Walter Eckland was black and instead of fleeing "educational oppression" he was fleeing real oppression, Denzel Washington would probably be cast but I think that Don Cheadle could do awesome things in this role, even if he is a little young. Could you imagine the uproar in 1964 if an "uppity negro" fell in love with a diplomat's daughter while living on an isolated tropical island with 7 little white girls?

I agree with you that the film shouldn't be copied. The thing I was trying to say is that this film has potential to be remade and stand on it's own merits. I wouldn't even call it Father Goose but the heart of the story would be the same.

I agree that this was a teriffic film and a remake, with the right actors, would be appropriate homage. I agreee that George Clooney would be good. Ten years ago Harrison Ford would have been good, but I think he is a little too old now (although not that much older than Cary Grant was when he made the original!). In fact, when I saw "Six Days and Seven Nights" I thought that the character Harrison Ford played was very similar to Walter Ecklund in "Father Goose".

Huge Ford fan. A new huge Grant fan. I know exactly what you are talking about. I just saw parts of Father Goose via youtube and all I kept going back to was Six Days Seven Nights. I love Six Days Seven Nights and I love what I've seen of Father Goose so far.

I really hope they never remake anymore of Cary Grant's films. The Charade remake was bad. Cary Grant had a style all his own, and no one can come even close to it,including Clooney.

No way! No one could take the place of Cary Grant.

Dwight Schrute for VP '08

For a long time I have wanted to MAKE a remake of this film with Jeremy Northam and Audrey Tautou.

reply

YOU MUST BE UTTERLY STONED OR UTTERLY STUPID. SECONDLY, TO COMPARE TOM HANKS TO CARY GRANT IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY RATIONAL.

reply

We already have far too many remakes - 99% of which don't come close to the quality of the original.

reply

i agree- too many remakes. i can't really think of a remake that was an improvement, except maybe 'sabrina', and even that is iffy- i enjoy them both.

however, just for s****s and giggles, how about clint eastwood and lindsay lohan???

now, wouldn't THAT would be a challenge to pull off??????

I'm against remaking this movie. I'm afraid they would turn it into something trashy like Lolita or The Blue Lagoon.

reply

remakes are usually awful. Nobody could possibly replace cary grant anyway. No Cary grant film should ever be remade.

reply

No remake of this film is necessary or proper.

You can possibly do a similar type film with some of those you mentioned, by not a remake.

Remakes suck big time.

Absolutely no need whatsoever for a remake... I watched it yesterday for the first time since I was a child and was pleasantly surprised by how charming and genuinely funny it was.

There's nearly as much prejudice against old films as there is against subtitled films... While there may well be a case for taking a bad old or subtitled film and trying to make a better version, when the original's as good as "Father Goose", why bother?
