Grey mask or grey skin?

When we see Fantômas without his disguise mask, he has got a grey complexion. I wonder if he was supposed to wear another mask to protect his true identity or if the skin of his face (but not the skin of his hands) was grey; and how the skin was turned to this colour, if this was the case.
