Most important film of the era?

I saw this on TV as a kid and later rewatched it and read the book as an adult. It's not just the most intense film of its era, but was based on fact and it should definitely have won best picture that year instead of My Fair Lady or whatever it was that did.
I was just glad that Henry Fonda was in charge --he was meant to be a JFK equivalent since the book was actually between JFK and Khrushchev. Imagine if Trump was in charge; we would get a pandemic, but with nukes.
By the way I saw that 2000 TV ripoff with Richard Dreyfuss. I mean WTF was the point of that?!

Of the main apocalyptic movies of this time period, this is the order I put them in:
1. Colossus: The Forbin Project
2. Failsafe
3. Dr. Strangelove

LOL, that would be the best we could hope for, Trump always makes it worse.

Never saw Colossus; I'll check it out.
