suicide scene

In the scene were Blackie commits suicide in the cockpit, we see him remove a small packet from the sleeve of his jacket pocket with a vial in it (implied to contain a poison like cyanide). However, Blackie seems to be dying before the packet is even opened, so how exactly did he kill himself?
