The Monster for this one actually resembles the Classic Universal look...

....Enough that when I first saw it when I was like 10 and knew nothing about Movie History I actually thought was part of the Universal series, and simply randomly colorized latter.

To be specific I placed it before Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, as I actually thought the Castle in that resembles this one after it's Tower Burned down, certainly makes more sense then how we where supposed to think that was somehow the same building as The Modern looking Hospital in Ghost of Frankenstein.

I know universal has a Copyright to that look, and that's why Hammer couldn't use it in Curse of Frankenstein, but I also learned on The Board for Hammer's Mummy film that Universal made some sort of deal with Hammer after Horror of Dracula was so successful, so perhaps that explains why they did what they did here.

Also the way this is sort of infamous for not fitting in at all with the rest of The Hammer films, maybe the reason was they where trying to make would could be almost viewed as a lose Sequel to the Universal series, just still with Peter Cushing.

Yes, a lot of people complain that the monster looks too "cheesy" and "fake" but I actually love the way the monster looks. It doesn't look remotely human so it is horrifying in appearance. I think the personality also fits with the one in the Universal series because the monster is misunderstood just like in the Universal Frankensteins. Just like I could feel sorry for the monster in the 1931 version and Bride of Frankenstein, I felt sorry for the monster in this one as well because it wasn't inherently evil. It was just taken advantage of by an evil person so it was a victim of someone else's selfishness. I love both the Hammer and Universal series.

Indeed. The movie is pretty much a homage to Universal from Hammer. It is actually a pretty nice pastiche and should be viewed apart from the regular canon. Not only did they have the look of the monster from the Universal movies but also many plot elements such as the mad and bad hypnotist from a carnival, the corrupt officials (akin to 'House of Frankenstein', a monster in the ice and a more heroic Frankenstein. They even created a beautiful recreation of the original Universal Frankenstein laboratory set! Hammer didn't really need to make this film, and I do prefer the regular Hammer Frankenstein series, but as I love Universal movies too I thought it was a nice homage.
