Edie's Bar

FYI, the exterior shots of the cocktail lounge that Edie owned were filmed at the building at 801 W. Temple Street on the Figueroa side. It's currently a restaurant called Vertigo's. Not sure if the interior of the club was the actual interior. I'm thinking it's not because the bar front's window was a bump-out window with drapes on 3 sides, but inside the club the drapes appear to be flat, as if over a regular window.

Interesting to note that when Edie mentions the location of the bar to the chauffeur, it is the actual location of the building (Temple and Fig.). Unusual for the movie business to give out the real location of a filming location in the script.

Also, I had always assumed that the second story of the building (Edie's flat) was a studio set, but on close examination of the shot where Karl Malden gets into the car after leaving Edie's, a portion of the window and some bricks in the background are seen as the car pulls away, and a clear shot of the bridge railing indicates it was shot on location. Don't know if WB built a fake second story for the flat scenes or if perhaps a second story existed and was torn down or burned down. The Fig. side of the building has undergone a rather characterless remodeling, so perhaps the building was partially destroyed by a fire or earthquake. Nonetheless, the caonpy over the doorway to the North of the entrance to Edie's still exists, along with the classic stonework on the Temple end of the structure. Would be interesting to know.

the building under construction across the street is the LA DWP building (now John Ferraro Bldg, finished in 1965 and recently designated a cultural/historic landmark. It's a beautiful building.

Corporate international style. I totally understand your point, about California, but it's recognition it based on it being a beautiful example of a style in currency at the time. It is of its age . LA had many beautiful examples of 50s "space age" Googie architecture, for example, that have been lost forever to redevelopment. The city has since been very proactive in preserving its architectural gems, including modern architecture. And thank goodness! ;)

Edie's bar is depressing. I don't care how many beatniks that latest act is pulling in.

Edie should have whipped up her own act.

Never saw this, but see my more recent post. The building was demolished this year. Interiors were sets, for the second floor. Google Streetview made that clear, while the building was still there. The first-floor bar could have been built inside the building, itself, as the location filmed is very small, visually. I'm not sure.

I may be mistaken, but the DaVinci condos being built on the site of Edie's Bar looked to have burned last night. Major fire in downtown LA.
