Bette never played roles too young for her

That's one she had over Crawford.

Some of the roles Joan played in the latter part of her career would have been better served by a younger actress.

I am not saying that an older actress should dry up and die, but a 50 year old woman (who looked every minute of her age) playing a 25 year old is ridiculous.

Davis played "older" or "character" roles long before she had to, because she had no vanity concerning her appearance on the screen as long as she looked like the character was supposed to look.

"Ms. Davis gave an interview once saying too many of her peers were still trying to play the ingenue when in reality they should have been playing the Ingenue's Mother. Correct".

And that's just one of the many, many reasons why I love, admire and respect her so much. I just love how down-to-earth she was, despite being the best actress ever and one of the biggest stars who ever lived.

She *did* however voice the young Charlotte. And that sounds ridiculous. This husky, cigarette-degraded, alcohol-drenched foghorn voice coming out of that cute young girl is kind of silly.

I suppose you're referring to Crawford, so I'd like to know in which movie was she allegedly 50, and allegedly playing 25? Regarding the subject of Dead Ringer, Davis is most definitely playing too young, an error compounded by the fact that she looked so ghastly in 1964, much older than her true age. A contemporary reviewer wrote, "Her face looks like a U-2 photo of Utah, and gloriously uncorseted, her torso looks like a gunnysack full of galoshes." Margaret and Edith could have conceivably been around 25 when they met Frank, which would make them 43 at the time the film takes place. Davis was 56, and looked decades older, so please don't anyone tell me she never played "too young". Nonsense!

I'm formerly known as HillieBoliday.....Member since may 2006.

I think that post was made in reference to her guest appearance on the TV soap opera...The Secret Storm, back in October 1968....playing a character named Joan Borman Kane.

Joan's daughter, Christina, was supposed to portray a character who was approximately 25; but had an attack of appendicitis and was hospitalized.
Joan volunteered to step in for Christina, I think she was actually 63 at the time.

I've read where it was utterly embarrassing for Christina who watched her mother's performance from her hospital bed....and it was equally embarrassing for the cast and even the viewership could not believe their eyes! Not only was she waaaaaaayyyyyyyyy to old to play the part....but she consumed alcohol (I guess to calm her nerves); which made it extremely hard for her to remember her lines and hit her marks...poor disillusioned Joan!

I think the OP was being a bit facetious, but Crawford did play roles that were younger than she was at least twice. One was the character in Strait Jacket. This is covered in the documentary on the DVD of the film. The character was written as a 50 something woman but Crawford insisted the woman be changed to 40 something. She also played the 20 something version of her character in flashbacks which was just ludicrous. And like the poster above me said, she famously filled in for Christina on the Secret Storm. Christina's character was 27 and Joan was in her 60s. There are arguably other instances in which she was a bit long in the tooth to play a character. Queen Bee springs to mind. She was the mother of two young children and she was what? In her late 40s? That's nothing today as many women have children later in life but it was more rare in the 1950s.

I'm a fan of Joan as well as Bette but both had shortcomings. Joan was obsessed with her age and appearing eternally youthful - freezing cold sets, the infamous dark bar across her throat, no shooting after 4 p.m. and Bette was a ball buster. Whatever.

They were both fabulous actresses and there's no need to cut one down to boost the other one up. There's also no need to act like one was perfect and the other was Satan incarnate. I doubt either ladies put as much energy into their alleged feud as their co-called fans continue to do. I see this crap only with female actresses and it's rather trite. The world is big enough for your faves and someone else's too. Grow up.

You use a word like faves and you're telling me to grow up?
