Better than Psycho-

(spoiler) I loved this movie- it has a real quality of nightmare after she walks into her sister's life. She encounters one thing after another she isn't prepared for, and even then she's almost able to skate safely through. No doubt it's a cheesy picture- but then so is Psycho (and I love many, many other Hitchcock movies). The acting is much better than Psycho, and it's a lot more suspenseful, because you care about the characters, esp Bette Davis. It doesn't have any terrible special effects, like Martin Balsam falling down the stairs. Both movies have brilliant scores, but take Bernard Herrmann's score out of Psycho and you're left with a very flat, empty film with one tour de force scene. I just wish Dead Ringer had ended before the pointless trial scene and the redundant last meeting with Malden, with Bette walking up the stairs after the servant Henry asks her what she would have him say, and she realizes he knew the truth all along: "And I thought I was all alone!"
