Location Detective - Edie's Cocktail Lounge

The mansion and cemetery have been discussed, Edie's Cocktail Lounge was filmed at the specific address mentioned in the film - Figueroa & Temple, downtown. The tall building under construction in the background, is still there, as a landmark.

The building housing Edie's lounge is still there, but quite altered - you can identify it by the main door of the entire building, next to what was "Edie's" (now bricked up), as well as some of the masonry of the structure. Although the building is suggested to have a second story in the film, it actually never had one. You can view the location on Google StreetView from the exact same location seen in the film - it takes a little maneuvering.

It appears that were were several individual "garages" off Figueroa in this relatively small building, in the 60s, and that "Edie's" was one of them, with a fake facade. Obviously, the interiors were a set. Those garages are all now bricked up, with no windows.

Surrounding buildings have been replaced, except for the aforementioned tall building under construction during filming.

UPDATE: "Edie's" actually faces N. Figueroa Street, close to the corner of West Temple Street. It's hard to find on Streetview, because Figueroa briefly splits at this point, with an upper and lower level for a few blocks. The building is gray, with a large billboard above it. It is surrounded by empty lots - the only building to survive that downtown block since the 60s filming.

UPDATE - it was demolished in early 2014, to make room for the new DaVinci Apartments. Oh, well.

I am formerly known as HillieBoliday....Member since May 2006.

What was the tall building under construction at that time?

"OOhhhooo....I'M GON' TELL MAMA!"

reply

Department of Water & Power, built in 1964. In 2000, renamed the John Ferraro Building.

UPDATE - Looks like the DaVinci may have just burned - major fire on that block.

Wow. Cool thread! I'm sitting here watching Carl and Bette in the so-called, "Edie's" and come here to find out that the wrath of Bette Davis nailed 'em all in the end. The DaVinci development did, indeed, burn to the ground in December 2014 -- at this writing, presumably to one for more arsons... who were likely channeling Bette.

#ateverydayfriend: I came here to do the same as I'm watching it now!

reply

Yeah, that was too bad, as the ORIGINAL building survived till a year ago.

reply

Yup, burned & demolished. Replaced by some expensive condominiums.

reply

The condos burned during construction - huge fire. They construction was restarted, and finished several years ago. The "bar" building was torn down for construction.

Was becoming a "location detective" a result of your having a degree in film history? How do you have time for all of your worthy endeavors? How you have time for anything after scrubbing the toilets of D-list "stars" is beyond me!

reply

Oh, sweetie. Your obsession with me is precious. If you don't understand what actual film production people do for a living, you might want to research. You seem jealous, but wanna-bees always are. Poor baby.

reply

Envious (not jealous) of what some crackpot hiding behind the anonymity that the internet supplies claims to do for a living? Is that your final answer?

reply

I have no final answer, for a person that attacks professionals, hiding behind the anonymity that the Internet supplies.
