Karl Malden, total heartthrob/spoiler

I totally loved the end. Edie has a choice of whether or not she should spill the beans to Karl Malden and tell him that the gig is up and not suffer a death sentence, but she doesn't. I am led to believe that she probably had more of a buddy buddy relationship with him. Many times in the movie you get the picture that he is quite boring, from the birthday present to wanting to have a chicken farm. I think she would rather die leaving Malden with the memories he had of her as a decent human being, but at the same time Edie would rather die remembering the man she actually once loved.

Yes it is a very good ending .

when she looks at her butler when he says, "What would you have me say at the trial..." Gives me the chills, that's total Bette Davis Eyes at work! One look, says everything.

Doncha know me Jim? I'm not Margret, I'm Edie. I didn't kill Frank DeLorca.

You have to remember, that she murdered her twin sister.

Even if she had spilled the beans and told him she was Edie
and had nothing to do with the conspiracy to murder Mr. DeLorca;

SHE STILL HAD TO PAY FOR KILLING HER SISTER.

"OOO...I'M GON' TELL MAMA!"

reply

Yeah, I don't think the last line makes much sense. She DID kill her sister, so either way she was in strife (and Malden's character would have known it).

She would still have suffered a death sentence even if she had spilled the beans, since confessing to the Karl Malden character would have gotten her convicted of murdering her sister. She decided it was more merciful to be executed for Maggie's murder of her husband than to spoil his memory (and love) of her "sister".

Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!
