Movie references in The Sucker/ Le Corniaud ?

Does anyone else feel like this movie is peppered with subtle nods to other famous, old movies ?...sort of Easter eggs for the cinema buffs ?

It dawned on me after the Naples episode, which to me looked like a hilarious reference to the "L'oro di Napoli/The Gold of Naples" , an old Italian movie by De Sica... or the Rome episode with the nocturnal fight at the fountains - "La dolce Vita" famous Anita Eckberg sequence ? lol ... perhaps the "Roman Holiday", considering the romantic intermezzo ? ...I'm not too familiar with old French gangster movies, but I've seen some old movies with Jean Paul Belmondo, and that French inspector somehow reminded me of him ... Mickey, with the Mickey Mouse key chain, but playing the tough American gangster, and so on.

Am I just seeing things ? ...or there was another clever/hilarious dimension to this movie?

The scene when De Funès repairs the Cadillac in the middle of the night, watched by a mechanic and his young son, is an homage to Charlie Chaplin.

A mix between the musical shaving scene of The Great Dictator and the "mechanical" aspect of Modern Times.

reply

:))) that is so true !
Thanks for the info, although I came a bit too late to answer.

Gosh... I'll miss this

It seems these Message Boards will be forever deleted by his majesty IMDb, without any regard to its mere users.
Nice to be talking to you here, the most constructive part of a film page...
(the Review part was the worst, with all the too many ego-filled, pretentious "reviews")

reply

Yep, it's really a shame that they are closing these boards. I cannot quite believe it.

Where else are we gonna talk about French films from the sixties?...

Incredibly bad decision.

I felt so angry , what with all the acute helpless feeling of this whole situation...

Meanwhile I found a thread of discussions about it on the Message Boards - it's been closed now - with hundreds of messages from bewildered users, some seething with disapproval , here is the link :

..there are 20 pages (although I remember a few days ago being more...), maybe it's worth having a look for solutions . I didn't have time to look through all but people were trying to discuss where to look in the future for a forum similar to the IMDb.

I'm also currently viewing this one too

(---later edit - this last link seems to hold some constructive solutions)

Maybe we'll figure out some silver lining...

Thanks, friend. I'll make sure to read all that before it's too late!
