Where is the DVD?

Here is John Ford's last film, an incredibly brutal history lesson and an incredibly delicate subject for Americans to face. Where is the DVD for this? And, let's make it from the 70mm materials, not a 35mm cropped copy. Extremely difficult to find anything on this film. The tape is out of print. This was a major reserved seat engagement when it initially appeared. Therefore, let's have the original restored version. Was there ever a program printed for this? Can't find that either.

Hello Ken, I'm with you on this. How can there be such a gorgeously filmed 70mm movie, and there's no sign of a DVD version in late 2004? Perhaps there will be a high def Sony BluRay disc issued as one of the first in 2005, in 1080p? It's nice to dream.

Looking at the filming locations, I visited Moab UT and Monument Valley UT during a driving vacation in Aug 2004. I had never been that far west in America before and I've never seen stunning beauty like it anywhere.

I'm keeping my ear to the ground.

Archie--
I'm waiting for the DVD of Cheyenne Autumn as well as 7 Women, and when these and the rest of the John Ford titles are released on hi def, I'll break down and buy a player.

But in the meantime, you might be interested in the new photo book on John Ford. It was just released here in the US and the back cover has an absolutely fantastic color shot of The Master (Ford, I mean) that I've never seen before. In fact it's full of rare pictures and it's written by a genuine Ford scholar, Scott Eyman, who wrote a very good biography on Ford a few years back. If it isn't in a store near you, check Amazon.

Best of luck to you.

This is great news about the DVD ,Are you able to confirm the running time
will it be the general release version of about 155 minutes OR the roadshow version of about 170 minutes.
Kind regards
Edward.

Just watched the DVD, released by Warner Home Video. Stunning. With Overture and Intermission. 156 min, as the roadshow version is deemed lost. Don't miss this DVD!

Dear Ken,

In 1986, whilst on a visit to Warners to release the sountrack from this film, I found to my dismay that not only had the multi-track music stems been "wiped" ("erased'), with only a poor monaural mix-down available, much of the film's other elements appeared to have been scattered to the four winds.

For me, this was a tragedy, as I consider this one of Ford's finest films.

I would suspect the reason a DVD is not available is due to the loss of the multi-tracks, not to mention the condition of the 65mm negatives; there is also the matter of the missing 15-minutes, which I saw, on the date of the film's premiere in the USA.

Recently, the soundtrack album was added to the i-Tunes music store. Since it's copyrighted 1987, I assume it's the one you worked on.

So is this CD compiled out of the monaural mix-down, since as you say the multi-track music stems had been "erased," or maybe simply decomposed because of the fragility of the magnetic recordings?

North is one of my favorites composer in film history, and Cheyenne Autumn is among his most impressive work. I'd love to get this but I am wondering if it's the best version available. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Though the DVD looks quite good, I would appreciate if the Warners would do a full restoration of this as it has been done for some 70 mm epics like Spartacus. I have a vague memory of seeing a 70 mm archive print when I was a kid and that was impressive.

Thanks, J.S. Since you are one of the extremely fortunate to have seen this in its original engagement, a question has been bugging me for years --- was there ever a program printed for this roadshow? I collect them and this has always baffled me.

The DVD of the roadshow version, with the restored audio elements, will be released as a Region 1 DVD on 6th June 2006. It is part of the John Ford collection, and not available separately.
