DVD release plus CD

Universal, if you read this please release this film.
Beautiful to look at, uplifting story and wonderful music.
Many thanks. I have already emailed to Universal a couple of times.
If you loved this film, please do the same. Also I hope they will
release the film score on CD. There are so many titles available from
the same composer but not this one. It's really a shame that with all the rubbish that is produced on dvd, this small gem remains forgotten or almost.

This is also one of my favorites, and the music was haunting. I don't know too many people who have every heard of it, but I know that since I've seen it several times (not within the last 10 years), it must have been on television frequently. I would love it see it again.

reply

You can still get it through amazon or ebay but on tape. Still worth it.

I agree that this is an exceptional movie that needs to be on DVD. When I all see the Grade D slasher movies that make their way to DVD nowadays, it's hard to understand why outstanding movies with a plot and great acting aren't considered for release. I will also pester Universal about it.

I agree I love this film and Mills is wonderful in it. As much as I like Kerr it really is Mills' performance you end up remembering

I watched this film yesterday after recording it off my DVR (CBC aired it recently), I'm sorry I deleted it after watching it though. It was well done, and definately changed my perception of Haley Mills as an actress back then.

It used to be on the A&E channel years ago and I recorded it but unfortunatly, eventually taped over it. Wish I had it now. I grew up in the 60's and saw all of Hayley Mills' Disney movies at the local theater. My parents were very strict about what movies I was allowed to see. My friend and I went to see "The Chalk Garden" which had adult themes, definintely not a light, frothy Disney movie such as Mills had made before. My parents assumed if Hayley Mills was in a movie, it must be "suitable" for young girls and I never told them this movie was definitely not a Disney!

I totally agree with the rest of you. THE CHALK GARDEN IS one of my all-time favorite movies, too; and it should definitely be released on DVD. I saw it for the first time when I was about 14, and I have never forgotten its haunting quality. The acting was top-notch.

Re the release of a soundtrack CD--great idea, too. I won a CHALK GARDEN press kit on e-Bay, which mentioned the prospective release of the soundtrack (the musical score was composed by Malcolm Arnold). I immediately went on the Internet and searched with no luck. I later received a response from someone indicating that the soundtrack had never been produced for some reason. I love the music; it stays with you for days after seeing the film.

It seems to me that the music could be taken from the film itself and produced on a CD. Maybe if enough people ask for it..............

I got in touch with the Malcom Arnold society and made enquiries about this.
Apparently the whole work has gone missing apart from one song called MADRIGAL, referred to Deborah Kerr's character. I found this song as a sample clip on amazon (don't remember which one)in one of those film soundtrack mixes and it was not even near to the original. It was sang?!? and the orchestra was not as good. I am sure Sir Malcom has a spare copy in his drawer. The society said that the soundtrack was never produced apart from this song (remade probably in another way).
I telephoned Universal UK with the DVD request and told that it will be made in the future. Hope for this decade.

SPBOSCHI--By any chance, was the singer Andy Williams? That rings a bell for some reason. I did not contact the Malcolm Arnold Society although after searching on the Internet, I pretty much ended up in the same place as you did--being told the soundtrack was never released. I didn't know it had gone missing. I am so disappointed the soundtrack was never released as it is memorable (especially the song they named MADRIGAL).

reply

Yes pink icicle, it was Andy Williams now that you mention it. I still hope Sir Malcom will get my message through the Society.

I just finished watching this again..just to remember how clever and beautiful she was. She really had the ability to reach everyone through her film.

reply

I just finished watching it too--probably my 20th time! The VHS is almost always being sold on ebay, usually for around $20-$30. Anyone who still has their VCR should find it suitable until MCA/Universal releases the darn thing to DVD. It is a beautiful movie, unfolding like a keen, brilliantly-conceived novel in the most magical of surroundings.
