Chalk Garden DVD Release

For all of you who have been waiting FOREVER, like me, for THE CHALK GARDEN to be officially released on DVD, the time has come.

I just received an e-mail today from CLASSIC FLIX that TCM has formed an exclusive partnership with Amazon to release a series of movies known as the "Universal Vault" series. These releases are known as "manufactured on demand." This includes THE CHALK GARDEN, which is available for rental through Classic Flix. com or for purchase through Amazon. Here's the link:

CHALK GARDEN is a Region 1 DVD. It doesn't look as if there are any extras, but just having this rare movie on DVD is MAJOR progress.

I just ordered it today through Amazon.

I'm interested in hearing what you think of the quality once you get it. Does it come with a legit DVD cover? Is is DVD quality video? This is pretty exciting. We've been hoping for this for years! Thanks!

I happened to see your post the day after I watched the new CHALK GARDEN DVD. I just got it in the mail a couple days ago. I didn't know what to expect when I popped it in my DVD player, but WOW! I found the quality to be EXCELLENT--much better than my VHS copy, which is from the early '90s, I think. It looked as if it may have been remastered. There's one scene near the beginning (when Deborah Kerr and another applicant are being questioned by Hayley Mills) where the film always jumped, but that glitch wasn't there on this DVD.

Yes, it comes with a "legit" DVD cover; it's put out by Warner Brothers as a "release from the Universal Vault." It is a Region 1; for some reason there's a line on the cover that says it should play on any DVD player but may not play on a DVD recorder/player or pc. I may try it on my computer also to see what happens. That line made me a bit nervous, and I think I actually expected the DVD to freeze or skip, but it played BEAUTIFULLY.

I think you would be very happy with it even though there are no extras. I am usually disappointed with no extras, but I am just so happy to have a legitimate release of this hard-to-get movie I don't even mind. I've been waiting for SO LONG.

The DVD, while widescreen (and a very beautiful print indeed - I watched it last night) is not anamorphic, i.e. won't automatically fill the TV screen if you have a 16:9 set. You will need to set you screen to "Zoom" mode. Otherwise, it's a great "bare-bones" DVD; it's too bad that there are no extras, but I'm glad to see the film released at all. Wonderfully high-class soap opera with the typical Ross Hunter gloss, but that great cast certainly keeps you glued to the story!

Got mine yesterday, and watched it last night. A WONDERFUL childhood memory for me, watching it again after all these years, Great performances by all, and I think this is Hayley's best performance.

I have a feeling I could be wearing out this DVD some time in the future!!

I got this for my mom. The picture is beautiful and it's widescreen. The only problem was I could not get it to play on my computer.

reply

Rachel--That's probably because it's a "manufactured on demand" DVD. I remember reading on the cover that it probably would not play on a computer. I am so happy with the beautiful picture quality. It's the best I've seen so far.

Just bought it, or rather, it just arrived a few days ago. I actually ordered it over three months ago, and had quite a wait! I ordered it off Amazon, and they let me know there would be a delay. Well, at least I got it, and can watch this beautiful and well-acted movie again, after all these years. The picture is crisp, the color good, and the sound is good too. (So often there's a problem with the soundtracks on dvds.)
