Actually, the location is quite an excellent spot for a mystery (or even a semi-mystery) to occur. According to my maps and reading, one of Mrs. St. Maugham's neighbors (or would have been, were he still alive at the time of the story) was a beekeeper and retired consulting detective by the name of Holmes. No doubt Laurel and Maitland read about the mysterious deaths which took place in the area, in August of 1909 (chronicled in "The Adventure Of The Lion's Mane").
