Locations!

I LOVE this movie, and I'm sure the location parts were filmed in the South of England. Does anybody please know exactly where the outdoor (eg: Tennis scene, John Mill's buying the lock scene, etc) were filmed? Many thanks in advance.

"The village where they go to buy the padlock is Alfriston"

I hope the original poster doesn't mind; I happened to find this as I was reading through the posts (from 2007), and it answers your question.

Someone may also have mentioned the location of the tennis courts, but I haven't come across that yet.

I absolutely LOVE this film, and the great locations add so much to the mood.

Thanks. I thought the village was Alfriston, as I recognised the monument in the centre as they leave the shop. I think the tennis courts may be Hastings, or perhaps Eastbourne, as the bus they get on advertises Beachy Head! Many thanks for your reply.

Actually, the location is quite an excellent spot for a mystery (or even a semi-mystery) to occur. According to my maps and reading, one of Mrs. St. Maugham's neighbors (or would have been, were he still alive at the time of the story) was a beekeeper and retired consulting detective by the name of Holmes. No doubt Laurel and Maitland read about the mysterious deaths which took place in the area, in August of 1909 (chronicled in "The Adventure Of The Lion's Mane").
