question

Why so few Carry On regulars? Were they simply unavailable for filming?

reply

Sid James was tied up making TV shows, Barbra Windsor did not join the team until
Carry on Spying the following year.

Who else was missing?

reply

Also around this time is when they started doing two films at once, so it may very well be that some were two tied up with the other film.

What's missing is an Adjective from this thread's title. (Sorry could not help myself - Trust me, I hate *Spelling and Grammar police* as much as anyone!)

Other than that I have no answer, except that I don't think they should have made any 'Carry on...' film if Sid James (and Kenneth Williams for that matter) was unavailable and making of it held off until he WAS available in some capacity no matter how minor.

Even they could only snag Sid for week to do a few scenes I think it would be worth it.
To me a Carry on film is not the same without him, no matter how small the role may turn out to be I'd be happier - ie: cameo.

also missing are Joan Sims, Hattie Jacques, Kenneth Connor, Liz Fraser

reply

I can not recall where I saw this but it has been noted that the central character was written with Liz Fraser in mind for the part. However, she turned it down because she felt that she was too identified with comedy and wanted to move to more dramatic roles.

The regulars did not all appear in all the films. But they can still be good ones. Sid james, hattie Jacques and Joan Sims are all absent from Carry On Spying, but it is a good film. and Kenneth williams and Joan Sims aren't in carry On cabby, which is also very good. i don't think they all had to be in every film.
