Jennie Denton

I wonder if Martha Hyer's call girl turned actress is based on a real woman in Howard Hughes' life, and/or is anyone famous we know or remember.

Here's something from the trivia section:

"One of the appeals of the Harold Robbins novel on which this was based was guessing which real life figures the main characters were based on: Rina Marlowe is obviously based on Jean Harlow, Nevada Smith seems to be Tom Mix, Jonas Cord is generally believed to be a thinly-disguised Howard Hughes, and Jennie Denton may based on Joan Crawford."

I actually did a double-take when I saw Martha Hyer. I didn't recognize her in the beginning. She's really good in this movie.

I have always thought thast the Jennie Denton character was based on Jane Russell.

I was appalled when Jonas Cord coldly listed Jennie's rape as he told her off. He made it seem as if she caused the rape.

He was accounting her sordid life as if it was no big deal. Then he told her that all he wanted was beauty and sex and of course who couldn't swoon for that and the rest is history!

Stella Stevens was originally up for the role and was pretty heartbroken when she didn't get it or the Carroll Baker role. She was under contract to Paramount at the time.
