This should be on DVD.

Fine film. Big stars. High IMDb rating. So where is the DVD, MGM?

NO *beep* S*** it should, studios these days days are so over due

You're absolutely right. In my opinion this is one of two movies (the other is Billy Wilder's ACE IN THE HOLE) that demand to be released on DVD. It's criminal that the studios don't know how good these movies are.

I know sometimes there are legal issues surrounding the releases of these movies, but c'mon--this movie is 40 years old. Get over the legal stuff already, and release it.

i agree. just saw the film on the turner classics channel and it was a perfect film. it should be on dvd.

Just to add another voice - I also agree that this should be on DVD as it is a marvellous film. I have it taped from the TV from years ago but hardly watch tapes now and would love a DVD version to save space.

The DVD has been out for a while in MGM's "Limited Edition Collection" (https://www.amazon.com/Best-Man-Henry-Fonda/dp/B003B3O5FY). It is a weirdly cheap DVD release, without extras and without even any menus! Instead the feature just automatically begins. The film is 1.66:1 and is presented nonanamorphically, in other words the image is both letterboxed and windowboxed. That's fine, but the strangest thing is, for a few moments near the beginning (after the opening credits), there are little slits in the masking. Never seen anything like that on a DVD.

They are missing a precious opportunity not having a big DVD release of this film in 2008.

This film has been released on laserdisc, I understand. That will have to do
until it is (belatedly) released on DVD.

reply

Its been released on Region 2 DVD eg. www.amazon.co.uk. A multi-region DVD player is one of the best investments I ever made. Also just got The List of Adrian Messenger.

A few years back, I got a DVD of this film sold in Germany (so German and English audio). I'm not sure if it is out yet in a Region 1 DVD.

I watched it last night on a dvd at my local library. I think it has just been re-released in the USA.

reply

Unfortunately the DVD has no subtitles. Other than that, I enjoyed watching it.
