DVD extras/bonus materials

May I just say that I LOVE the bonus materials on this DVD.

Best of all is the audio commentary by Peter O'Toole--- I could've done without the "moderator" quite frankly, but it is O'Toole's illuminating and intelligent (and sometimes hilarious) commentary that is a real gem. It's too bad that Burton didn't live long enough to add to the commentary. (Burton died in 1984 and DVDs weren't around back then.)

They were kind enough to include two unrelated interviews with Burton, of differing quality.
The 1967 interview with Kenneth Tynan is WONDERFUL!! He talks to him about ACTING and his start in the theater and even has him do bits from "Hamlet" and "The Boy with a Cart." He is so magnificient in both of these impromptu performances, it brought tears to my eyes. He was so amazing- so amazing- I can't say that enough. It made me sad I'd never seen him on stage. He also probes a bit into the personal aspect of Richard needing space on stage. That he's uncomfortable with touching & kissing in front of a camera. I've always sensed he needed space, but felt validated that I was correct and not merely projecting my own thoughts on the subject.

The 2nd interview, 1977 with Ludovic Kennedy is not to my taste. He spends almost the intire interview asking him about his drinking, whether or not he's an alcoholic, why does he smoke so much, why does he get married so much, etc..... WHO GIVES A FIG?!?!?! I mean really- this is "national enquirer" stuff. I don't care about an actor's personal life- And there is something about Burton- it even seemed disrespectful to me that Mr. Kennedy was asking such personal questions. To Burton's credit though, he seemed to answer him with candidness and without hesitation.

Either way, the bonus features alone are "worth the price of admission" as they say. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! :)

Great audio commentary by O'Toole is particularly brilliant. Fantastic his pure wit was captured so well before his recent passing.

DVD watchers should be advised that commentary is not in Bonus features, but hidden in Setup options. In my opinion, it's odd when this happens on dvds, because often commentary can be overlooked.
