Great movie, poor sound...

I watched this gem on DVD tonight. A pity about the sound though, it was really bad, S sounds in particular. Is the sound as bad in other Godard movies? I watched a Gaumont DVD release.

reply

I expect the sound wasn't great to begin with, since Godard (and other French filmmakers of his era) filmed as naturally as possible, and with minimal equipment. That's all part of their charm.

sound is actually the most important element of style in this film, and it is often used in film classes that are studying sound.

reply

yes, exactly. back in my film school days the sound in this film was used in teaching courses.

particularly the stylistic choices concerning manipulation of sound, like in the cafe scene.

reply

yeah, particularly in the cafe scene, i really appreciated the fact that the minute of silence included us, it wasnt simply the 3 of them who were silent, but all the sound stopped, and i found this to be quite engaging of the viewers. in fact, i found quite a bit of elements to engage us, every so often the characters would turn and speak straight into the camera, ect, ect...

reply

Actually you're wrong, everything stopped BUT the 3 of them, as the hndclapping was loud and clear - that was the genius of that scene! :-)
And I agree with one of the above: the sound-"design" may be disliked by some, but it was all made on purpose.

actually clap55 wasn't talking about the dancing but about the actual minute of silence at the table.
