Actually, probably, the best way is to learn and practice it while watching that part of the movie sequence several times over and over. Check your DVD player has a A-B repeat mode.
I think the tune they dance to is "The Madison." Correct me if I'm wrong (or maybe there is another post about the music.).
i love this scene - and the dance! I wish I actually knew someone who's seen it so we could do it!
I just found this - its from a film called The Go Getter with Zooey Deschenell and features a homage to the dance from Bande A Part (and you can see the steps pretty good) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fJ9sfxUdLQ
Do you have monkeys in Scotland? ~No, but if we did we'd probably deep fry them!
Just saw this film and enjoyed it---the dance scene were like extra frosting on a cake---looked like a 1960's early French version of the Hustle to me! Almost tried to pick up on the steps myself! I love European New Wave flicks of that era because you are literally watching film conventions/boundaries being tested/pushed/broken right before your eyes, and they almost come across like the directors and cast had so much fun doing them, because they were reinventing cinema for a (then) new era, to some extent. That's why I have so much fun watching them myself! With BAND OF OUTSIDERS,there's such a zest for life and exilaration coming from the characters that runs through the entire film, with dome pretty realistic stuff for this era shown in the film. Didn't like it when Arthur smacked Odile around because he couldn't break into the house--that was some cold s*** right there---he was being a total a**hole at that point. And I though he was more interesting-looking than Franz, who always seemed to be going for that movie-gangster look. Other than that, this film was a joy to watch---the only other Godard films I've ever seen are BREATHLESS, WEEKEND, and VIVRE SE VRIE ( which I kind of liked too). BAND OF OUTSIDERS is way more philosophical AND fun, though.
