what is the title of the song they dance to?
and who performs it?
I think it's "The Madison Time" by Ray Bryant Combo, which was also featured in John Waters' film "Hairspray".

Does anybody have a link to the original recording of this, not a souped up newer one? All the copies I can find are the re-recorded versions. Maybe I'm just looking for an instrumental version.
shareThe dance is certainly a Madison but the music was composed especially for the film by Michel Legrand.
shareIt's definitely called Madison Time, 'cause I've just been listening to it on Napster. Legrand may have done the arrangement, but I assume it's the tune written by the Ray Bryant Combo.

I've just listened to Madison Time by the Ray Bryant Combo and though the musical style is very similar, obviously, it is definitely not the same tune used by Legrand for Bande a part. Legrand was asked for a Madison-type dance tune and that's what he composed. Listen for yourselves:
