Is this like You Are Not Alone?

I just hate that it is such a old film and in black and white. May give it go though. Looks pretty good. So is this film similar to You Are Not Alone in anyway?

reply

Yes, the plot is similar: love between boys in school and the teachers' opposition to it. But whereas You Are Not Alone is light-hearted and comic, Special Friendships is much more serious and tragic.

Thanks just saw it and see exactly what you mean. Right up there with You Are Not Alone with being just as good of a film but a lot more sad. Couple of other differences as well.

The boys (Bo and Kim) in You Are Not Alone are not the same age! Kim is 12 and pre-pubescent, while Bo is 15 and past puberty. This is made quite obvious in the shower scene. It is also reflected in many other scenes in the movie, where Bo is clearly aware of the social implications of his desires and shows inhibitions about expressing them, while Kim is child-like and unreflective.

Kim's very youthful nature has disturbed many of the film's admirers (let alone its detractors, who consider it pedophelia), in that it's not clear that he is really old enough to know what he's getting into. Personally, I think it's a wonderful portrayal of youthful gay emotions -- I had a crush on an older boy at the age of 10, but didn't identify myself as gay until I was 16.

I suppose most has already been said in this thread about the question the OP posed, but I will at least say that I too agree with Cantoris-2.

Also, lucaswillem, nice to see you around again. Although, again, in a very old thread.
