Which character did he play? I'm thinking the drunk young sailor with Keenan Wynn. Is that right?

No. He is in that scene but he is the one who actually knows something about cameras who says the cameras are too heavy for the mission.

The young sailor with Keenan Wynn is Steve Franken, probably best known as Chatsworth Osborne Jr. from the Dobie Gillis show.
