One of best films of 1964

I saw this one while I was in the Republic of South Korea in 1964. Thought it was pretty good. The part at the start when they are killing those Japanese troops in that ditch, just then a plane passes over saying that the war is over. Their lives are spared. Beautiful scenery in the movie also. Actress Capucine had a terrible ear infection during the filming and looks really thin.

I saw The 7th Dawn on TV in the late 1960s when I was a kid. That opening execution scene is about the only thing I remember about the movie. That and scenes of William Holden walking through the jungle. I remember liking the movie, but beyond that, its a complete blank. Wish it was on DVD. I'd like to see it again to see if it sparks an memories.

Holden looked very thin as well.
It must have come at a very opportune time just before the Vietnam War started to really engage the country.

The Vietnam War era officially started in August of 64. I know because I got my honorable discharge from the Navy in Sept of that year and was told I would be a Vietnam Era veteran, etc....... as it relates to VA benefits.

I saw this as a 12-year-old in a theater when it was first released, and it really opened my eyes to the geopolitical goings on in that part of the world.
Even then, I would see footage of American advisors in Vietnam on the evening news. (Altho this story took place in Malaysia, some of the same politics and events apply.)

Totally underappreciated.

It stands up to the test of time really well. A mature storyline dealing with the oncoming independence of Malaysia in a thoughtful, realistic manner. I was impressed with the location settings, the international cast, which also gives prominence to Asian actors, which in itself was a rare occurrence at the time in a British production.🐭

Holden was fresh from a stint in rehab before doing this...by this time he had become an alcoholic.

Nice! I'll have to watch this sometime.
