Watch the trailer here

From Trailers From Hell. You can play with or without Alan Spencer's commentary. I recommend both:

A most excellent review / trailer link here 😁 . Thanks so much for sharing this WarpedRecord ☺ . I'm actually watching this movie on TCM right for the second time 😀 . I caught this great film about a couple of years ago on this same channel 😁 . I agree Tony Randall was the better choice for this role 😉 .

You are very welcome, ms-zanadu! This film is consistently fascinating -- hilarious at times and very sad at others. It's a shame Tony Randall didn't get more leading roles because he is mesmerizing here.☺

Totally agree here WarpedRecord next to his other TV Show role as Felix in " The Odd Couple " this was definitely another stand-out memorable role of Tony Randall's career ( especially since he played so many characters in one sitting - very well done on his part ! ) 😉 .

Thanks so much for the TFH. I absolutely love 7 Faces of Dr. Lao. Alan Spencer's commentary was enlightening with interesting tidbits/back story.

I, too, saw 7 Faces of Dr. Lao MANY years ago and was enthralled and a whole bunch of other superlatives. I purchased the VHS tape as soon as it was available and for many years, treated every person who visited me with movie nite and the showing of 7 Faces...

Back in the day, it often aired on TV (Saturday Matinee Movies) and for some strange reason, the critic of the newspaper's weekly TV Guide insert, would post a negative review of the film and a harsh review of Tony Randall's portrayals. I never understood how critics hated 7 Faces but, we, the audience, LOVED IT.

FYI: Years ago, I read in The New York Daily News or Variety that Gregory Hines was interested in doing a remake of 7 Faces and he wanted Michael Jackson in the cast as well. (true story).

Thanks again for the trailer! :)

Hello, Junetenbrown:

You're very welcome for the link!

I suspect that critics initially dismissed this film because it is very dark and very weird – both of which are good qualities in my book. Perhaps they were expecting a feel-good children's fantasy? This has "cult film" written all over it, which means it's not likely to appeal to general audiences, but those who love offbeat, quirky films will love it a lot – as we do.

As for the remake talk, I suspect that never progressed beyond the talk stage? I'm not big on remakes, but occasionally they manage to improve on the originals. This is such a curio, existing in a place and time, that I would rather see this as inspiration for a different film than for a remake with a different cast.

That's correct re remake/talk stage. After that article appeared, for a while I followed the news diligently but there was no further mention...

[ R.I.P. Gregory Hines - R.I.P. Michael Jackson ]

Onward to further trailer viewing....
