New dvd

Just wanted to give a head's up to all Lao fans...

A new dvd of 7 Faces of Dr Lao was issued as a dvd-to-order by the Warner Archive a few weeks ago with almost no fanfare. It just suddenly appeared in their back catalogue.

I'd resisted buying the previous dvd as it was 4:3, but this new version is 16:9. I have to admit that I found the colors in this version a little muted (especially given how vibrant Metrocolor usually looks) but having it in the right aspect ratio compensated for this.

Unusually for the Warner Archive, this isn't a bare bones release. The disc includes a trailer and also a short doc on make-up artist William Tuttle.

Ummmm...the original pressed dvd (not the new burned on demand dvd-r you sing the praises off) was a double sided disc with both full screen/widescreen versions of the film, AND the short makeup featurette you speak off was also included. Personally folks, pressed dvds are much more reliable so try and get one of those in preference to the archive dvd-r one.

I recorded this movie from Turner Classic Movies and wanted a real pressed dvd copy also, but it was out of print and people wanted way too much. Then it was re-released in full screen only which makes no sense to me. I finally found an original pressing that has the wide/full sides and paid $20 for it. I really don't understand why they would re-release it in full screen only. I have seen comments where people referred to the town as Abalon... not seeing the E at the end that the wide screen shows. I saw this in a theater growing up and still love the movie!!!!!!!!!!
