Dr. Lao's smoking scene faked?

At some points in the film, Dr. Lao is seen smoking a pipe with smoke coming out of it. I have heard that Tony Randall was very much against smoking, and it says so right here on IMDB. Could the scene have somehow been faked? My dad told me that one time on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, he told him to put his cigarette out, saying, "Will you put that thing out?!" I've never seen the episode, though.

my guess is that he's not smoking tobacco. there's plenty of smooth herbs (sage) that could be smoked for a brief scene like that.

Oh. I never really thought about that. Thanks!

Randall smoked for a time and then kicked the habit. I don't remember exactly when, but reformed smokers can be downright Messianic.
