Best commander of the base ... Robert Lansing or Paul Burke ???

I used to love this series back when I was a kid. Along with "Combat" most of the programs I liked on TV were war shows.

On Twelve O'Clock High there were two commanders ... I forget now when and why they switched over. (check below for my Wikipedia discovery)

Robert Lansing as Brigadier General Frank Savage (season 1)
Paul Burke as Colonel Joe Gallagher (seasons 2 and 3, two appearances in season 1)

Here is an explanation from Wikipedia about that change:
At the end of the first season, the studio executives decided a younger-looking lead actor was needed.[1] In the first episode of the second season, General Savage, played by Robert Lansing, was killed in action and replaced by Colonel Joe Gallagher, played by Paul Burke. (Burke, though considered more youthful-looking than Lansing, was actually two years older, a fact that TV critics were quick to point out.) The decision proved unpopular and the ratings began to drop.

As a kid I liked the baby-faced Paul Burke better, but as an adult I much prefer Robert Lansing who had infinitely more gravitas.

Paul Burke, suffering from leukemia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma, he died at his home in Palm Springs, California, in 2009 at age 83.

Robert Lansing was a heavy smoker and died from cancer in 1994 at age 66.
