Twelve O'Clock High, the Drinking Game...

While this won't be as popular as Combat! or other shows, thought it would be fun...I'll start it off...

1- Everytime it shows that one B-17 landing without landing gear, and taking out the tents...Have a shot of your favorite beverage

2-Everytime it shows the FW (190) get it's right wing blown off with harbor in the background, take 2 drinks

3-Everytime you see Bruce Dern as a guest, take one drink

4- Anytime you see General Savage smile, take 3 drinks (don't worry, you won't get smashed)

5- Anytime you hear Harvey Stovall say "Oh, General?" to Bob Lansing, take 2 drinks

6- Anytime Anyone lights up a cigarette, take a sip of water! Anything else and You'll be passed out by act 3...

reply

You won't get too snockered with Bruce Dern as a guest. He was only a guest 4 times per IMDB guest star info.

Drink everytime you see a B-17 go down. You'll be going to AA meetings after just a few episodes. Sadly in real life about one third didn't return from missions.

Take a drink when just Savage himself smokes. You'll still get wasted, but your alcohol will last a little longer.

reply

Anytime you see Gen. Savages B-17 "Picadilly Lily" after being shot down, back at the base and and in perfect condition, Take 2 drinks! Seems like he got shot down at least a half dozen times...His bomber should have at least been Pic. Lily #2, #3, #16...etc...

Anytime you see Robert Lansing flying with a new Co-pilot- and that man is alive by the end of the show...Take 1 Big Drink...

reply

His copilots were about as lucky as red-shirted crewmen in a Star Trek Original Series landing party.

reply

Everytime you see a B-17 in a uncontrollable dive, usually flown by either Savage or Gallagher, and it regains control at 20 feet (above the ground)... take a shot!

reply

Any time you see Savage's/Gallagher's plane shot full of holes and the holes disappear in the next scene, you're not drunk enough, yet. Chug another one.

Episode from today "The Threat" This actually happened beside where a gunner was shooting out the side of the plane. Swiss cheese one minute. Healed the next.

reply

Good one, Friend! Keep it up...how about...

Every time you see a shot that you recognize, such as a B-17 crash landing from right to left, and then see the same shot reversed, meaning the B-17 is now crash landing from left to right (the film reversed-and lettering too) Take two hardy swigs!

Everytime you see same target hit, such as the rail yard or the farmland and trees(orchard?) at end of shot, better just take a small sip...Anything else and you won't be able to finish the show.

Everytime you see Sgt. Komansky with a different girlfriend, take 1 drink.

Everytime you see the same shot of 3 or 4 Forts flying thru flak, take another small sip. Anymore and you'll wake up just in time to see the end credits...

Everytime you see someone you recognize from the old Twilight Zones series, take 1 drink only. Many of the TOCH shows showed 2 in same episode, Major Stovall (RIP Frank- you left this world too young) and Doc Kaiser (Barney Phillips..."Will the Real Martian please stand up" Zone episode was great, esp. his 3rd eye in forehead! He should have left it in on 12 O'clock High while examining wounded flight crews! That would have sent them to the Flak Farm (Red Cross R&R mansions- complete with butlers and breakfast in bed) In a Hurry!!

Everytime you see footage (from a german gun-camera) of a hapless silver P-47 getting shot down, and it's suppose to be an axis fighter, take 1 sip. That footage usually finds its way in every dogfight shown!

reply

How about every time Komansky gets shot take a drink. The old boy is shot more often than Marshall Dillon was in Gunsmoke.

Maybe two drinks when he gets in fights.

His xrays make good conversation at the medical station.

reply

Especially amazing since Piccadilly Lilly wasn't accepted into service until May 7, 1945.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

There were several PL planes throughout the series as many were shot down. It was there at the pilot episode when Gallager was a Captain of the Leper Colony.
Remember that Savage went down in the Piccadilly Lily, but it was back next episode with Gallager at the controls.

Perhaps we should name them as the Enterprise in Star Trek was named: Picadilly-A, Picadilly-B and so forth. I haven't kept up with the total destroyed so don' know what the final letter would be.

Where did you get the fact of it coming into service May 7, 1945?

reply

Because Piccadilly Lilly is an actual plane. Google it. It's still with us at the Chino Airport. It used to be on display outside, but is now in a hanger being restored to flying condition.

An old picture of it on display:

Cool.
Guess they borrowed the name as a tribute to the WWII B-17 fliers.
Works for me!!!

Thanks.

Just for my curiosity: Was there a civilian version of the B-17(without turrets and artillery, of course) and what was it called?

If you google your question, you'll usually find what you're looking for. :-)

Every time they show stock wartime clips of...

- The P-47D wing guns firing, take a drink
- The pair of white-spinner Spitfires making mock rear attack and zooming past, take a drink
- The pair of white-cowled P-47's doing mock attacks on the Fort boxes, take a drink
- Every time the film clip is reverse-image (look for the early, or prewar, clip of the Bf.109D [or early Emil] with its fuselage numerals reversed), take three great big slugs.

Down the Hatch!

You have both the right and wrong Piccadilly Lilly. Yours is Piccadilly Lilly II, a B-17G that was used in the filming of the 12 O'clock High TV series which, in turn, was derived from the Gregory Peck movie of the same name.

Colonel Bernie Lay, co-author of the book and screenwriter for the movie, was recounting the B-17F Piccadilly Lily of the 8'th Air Force, 100'th Bombardment Group (the "Bloody Hundredth"), on which he had flown.

Piccadilly Lily was lost during the October 8, 1943, Bremen bombing after, among other abuses by the enemy, a FW 190 slammed into her. Lieutenant Murphy and 2nd Lt. Marshall F. Lee (co-pilot) were killed while attempting to keep the aircraft steady for the crew to bail out when her fuel tanks exploded. Waist gunner Sgt Dickerson was also lost on this, his 25'th mission.

As for the drinking game, take a swig every time the exact same fuselage bullet hole pattern appears from the exact same wing mounted gunfire. Oh, I know, it's just 'consistent grouping'.

Raise Your glass and Take A Drink and salute and say a prayer for all the Fine Young Men that were lost over Germany and in the ETO in the Second World War...Americans, British, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, Poles, French, South Africans...And any other Allied airmen.

My Uncle flew a B-24 in ETO named "Custer's Last Stand" (I certainly wouldn't name my plane that-too unlucky) and survived the war...He passed several years ago...

reply

Anytime Gallagher's dad or brother is mentioned.

reply

SALUTE!!

And keep in mind — not all the Germans in uniform were necessarily Nazi party members; many were merely soldiers following their orders and doing what they were told.  A lot of German mothers lost their sons during these dogfights, and they deserve to be remembered as well.

War generally proves not who's right, but who's left.

Take a drink every time a silver P-51 changes into a green or cami P-51, and then changes to silver again in next shot...(The Outsider)

reply

Anytime Gallagher barks "Atten-Hut!" in the briefing room to bone-tired combat crews, take a drink. If he's chewing out "Hotshot" fighter pilots, take 2!

Anytime you see a black man on the show, take three drinks.

Anytime you see a naked lady painted on an airplane, stop drinking immediately! You've had too much and are dreaming!!

Anytime Gallagher is piloting a P-51, take 2 drinks.

Anytime you see the shot of the P-38's breaking off and heading home, take 3 drinks.

Anytime Major Stovall comes into the room and turns the mug around to signify a mission is on for tomorrow, take one last gulp and head for your cold, damp bunk!

Or changes from a P-51D (teardrop canopy) to a P-51B (framed greenhouse canopy) or a P-51A (framed greenhouse canopy and Alison engine with the carburetor duct above rather than below the prop spinner) in the next shot.

As for B-17Gs (chin turret) turning into B-17E/Fs (no chin turret), fuhgeddaboudit! That's another one that you should only drink water for!

Other than the SS, the Luftwaffe's pilots were the most dedicated and ruthless Nazis. Tradition informs us they were delighted to bomb the civilians of Rotterdam.

reply

Every time they bomb the orchard, take a drink.

reply

Every time Savage or Gallagher tells the formation to "tighten it up" take a sip.
Every time there is a problem on the plane and Gallagher tells Komansky to "check it out" take a drink.
Every time they are attacked by fighters and someone says "it looks like half the Luftwaffe" take a drink.
Every time somebody gets a new English girlfriend with a dark secret, take a drink.
Every time someone mentions French Resistance, take a drink.
Every time Doc Kaiser meets the returning planes with a grave look on his face, take a sip.
Any time you see an episode without Gary Lockwood, Bruce Dern, or Tom Skerritt, take a guzzle.
