The Rogues on DVD

20 out of the 30 eps of that hilarious TV-series starring a wonderful cast are now available on DVD in Europe (Region 2)!
"Kinowelt Home Entertainment/DVD" released those episodes with the original and the german language track.
No bonus features unfortunately... only 20 episodes were screened in Germany so only those dubbed appeared now.
Check out Amazon.de and search for "Gauner gegen Gauner" (german TV-title). The DVD-Box contains 5 discs.

I HOPE THERE WILL BE A RELEASE OF ALL EPISODES IN THE STATES AS WELL!!! LET'S KEEP FINGERS CROSSED!

WOW! Thank you ever so much! I just ordered this! I am so happy to know that it IS available, that it is on DVD, and that the sound is in ENGLISH! Yey! I used to love this series. There can never be another like it. With all those witty actors! Wow! I am so excited! Thanks so much for letting everyone know where to get it!!!

reply

Hi -

thanks for your note!
I'm very satisfied to see you happy!
Unfortunately it's not the complete series on DVD but let's hope there will be a perfect presentation one day!!!

Perhaps someone of the studio who is holding the rights read our lines and decide to present all eps in a wonderful DVD-Box.
Wooow... that would make my day!!!

Regards,
Wolfgang.

Wolfgang: It is now Sept. 3rd and I have already viewed the first disc (4 episodes). I LOVE it! Thank you SO much!

I just wish I knew German :-(. Why? Because, for instance, in the second-to-last episode on Disc 1, there is a frame wherein a headline of the Herald Tribune newspaper is in German! And this is integral to the plot! Ugh! Also, the set came with pamphlets and such, all in German, and I would love to be able to read them!

Aw, well, a small price to pay for being able to see these wonderful old episodes once again!

I also loved seeing some American movie actresses in their early 20s, like Jill St. John, Jessica Walter (who is listed as "Jessica Walker," ugh), et al.

Anyway, I can't thank you enough, Wolfgang, for turning me on to this set! It's marvelous!

I like the series very much too and I really hope there will be a proper release of ALL episodes in the near future...
If you need some translations... just send me some scans and I'd be delighted to translate them for you. :-)

Kindest regards from Austria -

Why, thank you, Wolfie! I will try to write down the exact headline from that one episode that I could not read.

Hello Wolfie and Pamela,
I can't thankyou enough for providing info of THE ROGUES on dvd. I have ordered them although I do have the entire series on dvd. The prints I have are only fair but if you would like the remaining episodes on dvd I will be happy to send them to you , after all you are fellow ROGUES fans. Contact me on my email [email protected] .

I am going right now to amazon-uk to order! helpful hint: all you have to do is buy a portable dvd player that is "code free" and play this and other great shows that they do not offer in the U.S. cost you about 100 bucks. i have gotten great british miniseries, etc. and movies that were never seen in U.S. for example: A town like alice with peter finch.

Hi -
I'm glad that my info about "The Rogues" on DVD in Europe could be of some help for you!
I hope you'll be able to watch the discs and wish you great fun with it!!!

I was in medical school when The Rogues first appeared opposite Bonanza on Sunday nights, and because of my schedule I only saw about half the episodes, but thought it was the best thing that had ever been on TV. I have called cable networks to search for episodes of The Rogues without success--they say it is not in syndication. Why not???

Thanks to your post I purchased Gauner Gegen Gauner. I then stripped the region code with CloneDVD2 software, and then purchased a Philips DVP3140 for $37.00, and it plays PAL formatted DVDs, but the region 2 code must be stripped first.

Finally, yesterday, after 43 years, I saw an episode of The Rogues. You are truly a Saint. Thanks for the Christmas present.

reply

Dear Syrano -

thanks so much for your kind message!

You made me very happy with your report.
It was a christmas present for me too.

Studios are releasing so many crap on DVD these days... let's hope there will be a DVD-release with ALL epsiodes one day!

I wish you many many entertaining hours with one of the most stylish TV-series of all time!

Greetings and HAPPY NEW YEAR from Austria!

Most DVD players are hackable ... unfortunately mine are not. I may be able to get around the region another way though (no further info there in case gov. eyes are watching). I will have to search for these. I LOVED this show as a kid, way ahead of its time, and if it's in German, I'm ok as long as there are subtitles or something (though it may be odd to hear Charles Boyer in German ... )

Hello, the series has the original English soundtrack as an option on this dvd box set , so it's worth getting. I love it and the print quality is superb. I do have the entire series , but these 20 episodes are the best quality ever!!!

They came in the post today. there is 16 DVDs two show per disc but the last disc only has one show. I am not sure how many show were made. The quality of the show is fairly good and I am delited to have them finally since I have been looking for them for years! I think that I paid about 30 dollars for them not sure since I purchased them with two other series. I consider myself luck to have them. I have only watched two show so far and loved every minute of those two show. I can tell you where I got them if you would like the information you can contact me [email protected].

reply

There is a gentleman (at least I assume he is) who is selling the entire season on DVD for about $35 (shipping included) on a site called ioffer.com.

I figured I could risk $35, and I am delighted! The picture quality is good (not great, but acceptable) and it is obvious that he must have originally taped the shows. Anyway, I finally have them all! If you cannot find it from this information, then contact me at [email protected] and I will ferret out the exact details for you.

Hope this helps.

reply

Hello
I am very happy with my purchase from Ioffer.com and the quality of it also very good. I have about 8 show left to watch yet. I must tell you that all the sellers on this site do not offer a high quality product like the Rogues was. so do not go on a spend spree like I did I got a few bad dvds but they have dvd's that you can not find anywhere else. ie Burns and Allen and Yancy Derringer. Honey West, plus many more rare titles.

It's obvious that the complete collection of the Rogues is a bootleg. Please don't patronize DVD pirates. They don't compensate the copyright holders in any way. They reduce the likelihood of this classic series ever seeing a legitimate release and they hurt the industry as a whole. Boycott bootlegs!

reply

But this classic series will NEVER see a legitimate UK/US release. There are just too many fingers in the pie to make it profitable for these markets when the demand is so low. Rights issues that simply cannot be resolved for historical reasons remove all possibility for a commercial release of so many worthwhile series.

Look at the way Hollywood persecuted Roddy McDowall over his private collection of movies. But without these private distributions, which are basically at cost+, much would have been lost forever.

Find METV they play the Rogues here in Pittsburgh on the weekends

reply

I would agree, but ONLY if a Film/TV series is available in DVD. If the copyright holders don't see fit to make it available, then I don't see how buying a bootleg copy hurts anyone. If the "copyright holders" are not compensated, that's their fault. In fact, I would hope that a market for bootleg copies would encourage them to put out a "legitimate release" not discourage them.

reply

Try www.ioffer.com and www.ebay.com for competing prices - I've seen them available on both. I loved this TV show and was so happy when I saw that it was being made available. Hope this helps.

reply

Thanks for sending the info on The Rogues and how to find it, at least in Region 2; worth getting a converter or whatever equipment. Still vivid in my mind for such delightful little throwaways as one episode in which a shady law office shingle, flapping in a windy beach near the sea, read: Flangrante and Delicto, Attorneys at Law

And the Actors! The wonderful Actors, the sense of being in on a secret, the kind of truly entertaining, subtle, adult joy of playing along with the brainy allusions and the witty scripts.

(Sigh) ....

Mmmm... glad I could give you some info re this excellent and entertaining series.
It's so fantastic that there are still fans of this almost forgotten TV-show around!

reply

saint-31,
I get to see THE ROGUES every Sunday morning at 4:00 AM(EDT). This is on a wonderful new network called, MeTV(and other names across the USA). It comes on right after HONEY WEST(1965-66). I was 14 when that was on and I did then and still do love Anne Francis.
I vividly remember watching the ROGUES on CBS on Sunday nights at 10:00 PM. Even then, as a young boy I was astounded that a show with such a cast only lasted one season of 30 episodes. Now, at 61 I enjoy them so much more on a deeper level. I used to watch it with my Mom who loved David Niven. It is a pleasure to watch this every weekend. Also, to read this posting and see so many loyal fans.

Happy Viewing,
RH

reply

Dear RH -

so many thanks for your kind and informative lines!
I'm sure some readers will appreciate your info about that network.

Yes, it's still astonishing that a TV-show with such a cast and such great and entertaining plots just lasted 30 eps.
Hmmm...

"Honey West"... yeah! I recently purchased the DVD's... they were released not that long ago here in Europe. Great fun!

I met David Niven once in Switzerland and had a few words with him. What a true gentleman he was and full of Charisma. I still enjoy watching his movies!

Wolfgang.

I am watching a re-run of "The Rogues" at 3:30AM CST. This is a marvelous show. Too bad the American public viewers are of such a lower class of taste.

reply

Hi...
great you're enjoying the show!
And it's fantastic that there's a re-run of this stylish and really well done show!

You're right... the real gems of television are always ignored by the major public! That's why those shows (now and then) are called "cult tv-shows"!

Wishing you great fun watching... "The Rogues"!
