Ann Howard's Death

Does anyone know how Susan Oliver's character met her fate? Did she jump from that cliff or was she pushed? If so, by whom?

reply

i believe she was pushed by Lee Webber...i think it was never really clarified.

I just watched 100 episodes in the last week, once it hit the Ann Howard storyline. I really loved her character and wish that they hadn't killed her off. I wonder why they did it? I am still in the midst of watching it, but they basically come out and say that Lee Webber did it. He has never flat out admitted it but it is basically a known fact. The Ann Howard storyline definitely was the best one out of the series so far (I am on episode 308 currently).

reply

the fact that Ann was Steven's twin and the half-sister to Norman and Rodney, would have made for some interesting relationships and stories. and poor Michael Rossi, i loved Susan Oliver and Ed Nelson together!

reply

I agree. I just loved her and felt so bad for Dr. Rossi. He always seemed to get the shaft where the ladies were concerned. :(

I am currently watching PP and am at the Ann Howard storyline. I know she dies. But, please spoil me: Does Dr. Rossi ever find lasting love in this series? Judging by your comment, I'm guessing not.

Am I anywhere near the imaginary cliff?

reply

I don't know yet. I just hit episode 400 so I don't know how it ends. I really do hope that Dr. Rossi finds someone before the show ends, but I'm not getting my hopes up! Episode 400 and it just got really interesting again! But I won't spoil it for you. :)

Th nighttime series ends "in medias res", especially for Dr. Rossi . He does fall in love with a great female costar - who he might have married if the show had continued - he has great chemistry with her too. (Btw I also loved Susan Oliver!)

And then you have the 3 sequels - the daytime soap and the two tv movies - all with differing storylines and conclusions. In the daytime Return to Peyton Place, Dr Rossi marries Selena Cross(who is quite different from the character in the novel)- his last relationship on the nighttime soap is explained away in one of the early episodes.

How did you get a hold of "Return to Peyton Place"? I checked ioffer so many times and they only have the regular PP TV series :(.

reply

I watched almost the entire daytime series back in 1973-74 - and I have a good memory. There was even a nighttime special - like a movie of the week - the first year of the daytime show. That show and the last two weeks on the series I recorded on audio tapes - which are gathering dust somewhere in a box.

Thank God I ordered my PP Set with all 514 episodes in good quality, the two old movies and the 2 TV movies (Murder in PP, PP: The Next Generation) 5 years ago in ioffer for only $50, because Shout stopped releasing more episodes after vol. 1.

I am now past episode 400---actually I'm past the 430s---and after watching every episode previous to this I can tell you that we never learn yet just how Ann died, although with all the circumstantial evidence, including Lee's personality and the testimony of both Hannah Cord and Chris Webber, we are supposed to think that Lee probably killed Ann. But I'm not convinced; I agree with the judge that Hannah and Chris's testimony is tainted---Chris had too much of a chip on his shoulder and wanted to get back at his brother (and it's curious that he didn't take his law books with him when he left Peyton Place), and Hannah was tainted by her desire to take the heat off of herself for lying about Ann and Steven's parentage for all those years (and just after the trial she set fire to Peyton's house).

Lee acted like he didn't care about Ann's death, and like he was the kind who could've killed her, but was his motive (anger over her coming back and digging up what happened when they were all kids) really enough to risk being jailed or executed for murder? Somehow I'm not convinced. Her death could have been an accident, or even a suicide (the last time we see her alive she walks to the edge of the cliff, but then steps back). Some things Lee does, like sending Steven to the house knowing Chris is there waiting to shoot, don't help his case much, and later he is willing to kill Leslie for Peyton. But really, I think the writers wanted us to think Lee probably did it, but never to be certain.

The only thing that might add more light is that I see Hannah is to appear in six more episodes that I have not yet come to, and maybe she'll say something that clears it up. But maybe not.

I've watched the entire series now, all 514 episodes. We never learn for certain what happened to Ann. It's just left as one of those Peyton Place mysteries, as with the question of what happened to Allison. Hannah does not clear up the matter (or even mention Ann) in her last appearances.
