Peyton Place Part 2 Due July 14th!!!

That's right, Peyton Place Part 2 has been announced for a July 14th release date. Everyone needs to support these releases, so the entire series of 514 episodes sees the light of day. I, myself can't wait until May 19th to see Part 1 arrive at my door. To see the proposed DVD artwork, go to tvshowsondvd. As of this writing, it is too soon to pre-order this, but the price of each volume is so cheap for a Soap Opera release, you can buy 2, which is what I'm doing. One will remain sealed for posterity. :)

sorry to be a pessimist , michaeldina, but the complete run of PP will never happen---there are just too many episodes- it sounds like it would take over 20 box sets to do the whole run --

I mean if DALLAS and DYNASTY - the only other prime time soaps that have been released -have yet to be not been completed --- how many seasons of DALLAS are left to be released? FOUR! and these are complete seasons and they have been releasing them for the past 7-8 years..

and DYNASTY is only at season 3 split in half ....and both these shows are much shorter than PEYTON PLACE in running time....and dare I say, much more popular with people today than PP... the PP releases in B&W will appear very antique to young viewers, despite it being the best soap ever on prime time

well I bought the whole run of Peyton Place at sell.com for $40.00 because I dont share your belief in it all being released commercially -- I will buy what's released of course. In the meantime, I can watch all five years on dvd --- decent pictures too.

Dark Shadows has a cult following because of its genre and thus has a much bigger fan base than PP....

reply

Don't be so damn negative- I have all of DS on DVD, and plan to buy all of PP as well. We don't need a defeatist attitude here. Instead, buy the DVDs from Shout! Factory, and tell them to keep up the good work!

reply

and you , ellichar , need to avoid profanity in addressing someone you dont know! apparently , good manners are not observed by some .

I am not being negative, just realistic -- the sales of this show will determine if Peyton Place's entire run of 514 episodes will warrant release --

from the relatively few posters concerning this show at imdb compared to Dark Shadows or Dallas or Dynasty, I would be surprized(though pleasantly so) if we even make it to the color episodes about half way through the run.

I plan to buy Shout's releases - I hope they release all uncut episodes.

reply

Frankly, I see no reason why they wouldn't release the entire series, if everyone who claims to be a fan of this show puts forth the effort to buy this. And the fan base for this series is global. I know this for a fact. Don't know if Shout releases their DVD's with a different region setting. From what they told me, Part 2 roughly ends with Allison finding out that Elliot Carson is her Dad. This is before the show aired 3 times weekly, before Stella Chernak, before Rita Jacks, she entered the storyline around episode #85. And it was before Martin Peyton's arrival, James Douglas, Hannah Cord and a host of other events when the series really took off story wise. Each episode runs 25 mins with opening & closing credits & Fox Logo included. Anything less is a syndication copy. I have faith that we will see all 514 released and it should take between 16 & 17 volumes as they seem to be doing 31 episodes per box set. Part ones prints will determine how well this will take off. Romance Classics prints were kinda crap, washed out, poor sound, Fox must have given them a huge deal to lease out the series regardless of how poorly it looked. If this looks like it was filmed yesterday, then the people at Shout, which is really the guys at Rhino Records video division, should get an Oscar!!! And I will have to be picked up off the floor in astonishment!!!!! :)

reply

Hope that you are right about this, michael ---this would cost easily over $400 if the whole show is being released over how many years? --- better they do what was done with MAN FROM UNCLE and release the whole series at once(yeah I can dream)

BTW Shout has released FATHER KNOWS BEST - the 3rd season comes out soon - and some episodes are missing scenes and/or are syndication prints - hopefully FOX has original prints of PP...

I wonder if they plan extras for this --- certainly there are many surviving actors.

reply

Ideally, that would be great if they would just release the entire series as one big box set. It did run for 5 years from Sept. 1964-June 2, 1969. There was a one hour unaired pilot filmed, but apparently, according to Shout, Fox doesn't have it. Which surprises me. I told them to contact the Estate of Paul Monash, who died in Jan. about 4 years ago. He was involved in that too & his daughter, Stephanie Monash appeared in the pilot. She also appeared in one episode of Peyton Place, in a scene with Mia Farrow, Ryan O'Neal, Kym Karath & Kimberly Beck when the Schuster Family was then living at the Peyton house. Regarding Father Knows Best, it could be that the original camera negative prints are either lost, not in good condition or the Estate of Robert Young has it, but wants too much money to agree to license it out to them, so Shout took Syndication copies, which is missing 3 minutes of air time. Shows then ran 25 mins. including opening & closing credits & studio Logo. Robert Young owned the series by the way. Back to Peyton Place. Yes, hopefully Fox is giving them excellent copies or they are both sharing the cost of remastering both sound & visual which is not uncommon for this to happen, as both have a vested interest to lure consumers to buy a series that looks fantastic, which ultimately will boost sales once word gets out that the series looks STUNNING!!!

reply

I'm not sure if the entire series will be released, but Shout! is very, very good at keeping up with the demand of what the fans want. In other words, if the releases sell, they keep releasing further seasons. I believe that's what built the company up (the DVD portion anyhow!) to what it is today.

I've yet to see this series in its entirety, so I'm very excited about the release of season 1.

reply

Yes, maybe the series won't be completely released on DVD, maybe only the Mia Farrow ones in B&W will be out only. She left the series 4 episodes before it went color. I think it might all depend on the quality of the episodes on Part 1 and everyone is waiting to see how it looks. Then we have to put our money where our mouths are, as everyone wanted this out on DVD for years & now that our wish is apparently coming true, we have to act. From what I see, only people in America & Canada can see this, as it's being issued in region 1 DVD format, unless you have a multi-region player or play it on your computer. There is a fan base globally & too bad they aren't reaching those individuals. I have the series on DVD, as when it aired on Romance Classics I taped it at the fast speed from a Satellite Dish & a buddy of mine converted it to DVD and I never missed one episode in the one year & 2 months it took to record it all. Yes, Shout is very committed I agree. I'm so eager to see how the quality of the show is & if anywhere it has been remastered.

reply

I got my hands on a copy of Shout's dvd set. I already posted my thoughts and some screen shots here at the Home Theater Forum. You might like to check it out. Here's the link and scroll down to post #141
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/sd-dvd-tv-shows-tv-movies/282558-m y-dream-came-true-peyton-place-dvd-may-shout-entertainment-5.html

About 20 of the episodes seem to be complete with 25 minute running times. The other 10 are in the 23 min. range. I'm sorry to say that they haven't all been remastered. Picture quality varies from episode to episode. Some episodes are nice and sharp, while others look like 16mm public domain-type stuff with scratches and specs of dirt. There are no extras.

Dear Friend:

I thank you so very much for writing me & letting me know the quality of the Peyton Place DVD's. How on earth were you able to get an advance copy?? Are you in the Biz? Apparently, these are the best that 20th Century Fox has on the series, which means it was not well taken care over the years. I can only image what the color episodes will look like if/when we get to that point. Romance Classics only seem to have 22 minute episodes around the time Marian Fowler entered the storyline and that was for a few episodes before going back to 25 min. episodes. Apparently nothing is consistent at Fox and what they have. 16mm prints can look splendid & they did in their day, but as long as the sound is ok and you can hear the dialogue without the music sounding with too much wow & flutter to them I can bare it. I can only hope that when/if we get up to the Ann Howard storyline, the prints don't look washed out like they did when Romance Classics aired it. I suppose Fox & Shout didn't want to invest in the small fortune it would cost to remaster the sound & prints on something they may not be too secure would sell in the 1st place, especially with 514 episodes under their belt. And it's a shame that no Peyton Place actor was approached to give his/her point of view on the series since all main characters are still alive. I guess we should be grateful the series is out. Peroid. Too bad Fox let this fall to pieces. Thank you for taking the time to write me. Feel free to contact me if you like: [email protected] It is also my name. Take care, Mike

I am saddened but not surprised that Fox + Shout have not gone the extra distance for this great show ---

these incomplete episodes , IMO, spell doom for this series ever being completed on dvd... why should consumers buy these if they are not complete prints??

I remember that this show was shown on the USA network in the 80s and I taped them all but then it was abruptly halted after about 8 months - then in the late 90s Romance Classics showed it - the second time it was run, I got that channel(finally)the day the series started over -- unfortunately I discovered some episodes were editted - since there were no commercials, it seemed that in that 15 year interim that Fox had lost complete versions of some episodes - they were complete(r) on USA network showings.

and no extras whatsoever ---with so many actors still living and available, it makes me believe SHOUT is not taking the time to do right by this show.

well I guess Shout will appreciate your business --

But if we consumers don't demand better quality on these type of vintage releases, the product will continue to be shoddy or inadequate..

You are willing to accept "clean, incomplete prints" -- how clean can an incomplete print be? Ive read picture quality varies from show to show -- how much work has been done to find original prints.

there are no special features - why? there is tons of material in the ABC and Fox archives on this show - and as I said before, there are many surviving cast members and creators of the show out there - surely some would be happy to talk about their years on PEYTON PLACE -- Ed Nelson, Barbara Parkins, Tim O'Connor to name a few..

reply

This is only the first half of the first season release. If there are going to be special features, they might be included on the second volume release. At least hold off on the complaints until the company is finished releasing the set! There could be a myriad of reasons why they didn't get the original prints this go round. As long as I can see and hear what I'm watching, I'm cool. I know other fans aren't as easily pleased as I am, but people need to consider that this show is over forty years old. The original prints may not even exist anymore.

I for one am thrilled that the show is available and that Shout! takes the time to serve a fanbase that is sorely neglected.

reply

dear Divingintheblue

unfortunately this 1st release is not even half of the first year of PEYTON PLACE- it is only 31 episodes- about one third of the year -- at that rate, it will take 16 - 17 sets to do the whole series of 517.

So you are right - there is plenty of time for extras if SHOUT intends releasing the whole show ... only time will tell

I love this show and believe that it deserves prime treatment by SHOUT. Fox is to blame for not doing a better job in preserving these episodes. There are plenty of other shows from this time period(64-69) that are in grade A condition --for example, THE MAN FROM UNCLE which I have just been watching - it looks like it was shot last year- nothing missing here. Because PP never sold well in syndication , Fox neglected it and did not take care of the prints, never realizing one day it might be made available in another form .

So I am grateful that PEYTON PLACE is getting an official release but only hope SHOUT will try harder to make these sets worthy of the best nighttime soap ever.

reply

[deleted]

There are many ways to do that -

mainly thru the internet --- you can go to the SHOUT website as I have, and you can email your thoughts on the PEYTON PLACE box sets -- very simple to do.

Also by posting your feelings here and on various other sites. such as Amazon, Home Theater Forum, etc - positive or negative - you will give the producers a chance to see our opinions and feelings. And perhaps encourage them to have better quality control and pay more attention to extras

You seem to think by voicing criticisms that I or any one else is discouraging the production of these sets which could not be further from the truth. Where do I say I am not purchasing these? I haven't said it because that it is not true - I have Season One.

and I have no idea what you mean by "the public at large isn't thinking about ..the exposure of this classic show"??? So what if they are not??

These forums are for fans and I consider myself a top fan of this show, posting on imdb.com years before anyone else did on Peyton Place the series.

so what are we suppose to do if we have concerns ? Shut up and just be thankful??

Shout's main concern is showing a profit, not our gratitude -- so if real fans like me are disappointed and express our concerns, what does that do? Does it cause the series to be stopped? Doubtful... Does it cause the quality to be improved in future releases ? It's quite possible...

I own both sets of PEYTON PLACE and will buy future releases...But I stand by my statements - too bad you seem opposed to my exercising freedom of speech!

reply

So is the whole series of PP already released in dvds ? Where can I get them ?

prjdean, what do you mean by "i own both sets of PP" ?

reply

SHOUT released two official sets of dvds - both from year one but only covering about half a year - then stopped

a complete set of the whole 5 years has been offered by sellers at sell.com and ioffer.com --- taken from when the series was shown on the Romance channel in the late 90s

reply

Thank you, how is the picture quality then ?

reply

The one I have is fine - excellent picture - and probably this is the only way to ever get the complete series -

it is on like 41 dvds -- I think all sets are from the same souce - Romance Classics channel - I think I bought mine from a Pensacola dealer

reply

Someone posted the entire series on YouTube - just finished watching it. Quality is variable from episode to episode (from inferior to adequate - none of the episodes have superior quality) but they are all reasonably watchable.

reply

I did see those -- and you are right about the quality. You have real patience to have watched the entire series - that must have taken a while...Still would like to see SHOUT release more editions but probably not likely.
