Addams Family were better

Granted, the original comic strips by Charles Addams, and the 90's Addams films with Raul Julia, were both better than the 60's Addams show, BUT, The Munsters was far too goofy, corny, and just The Three Stooges in monster make-up.

Since you had the same thing to say on the Mockingbird Lane messageboard, I'll just copy and paste what I replied there.
I thought the TV Addams weren't all that macabre. The Munsters are always labeled goofy slapstick by Addams "sophisticated" fans while the atmosphere of scenes in the Addams Family TV show always centered around some eccentric visual thing they were doing in their living room...in EVERY episode. Not dark or macabre, just eccentric. That's slapstick to me.

I think the 60's TV show was much better, I really liked the message they conveyed, that ppl can be different and even ODD, but still are good ppl with hearts of gold.

Just because we lose today's battle doesn't mean we've lost tommorow's war.

What is the point in threads like this? It's great that the OP can form an opinion (because we all know how hard doing that is), but really...who cares if you didn't like the show. Do you think someone will see your post and decide to dislike the show just because YOU say it's silly?

Something is wrong with our society. Too many nitwits think their opinion actually matters regarding the most trivial crap. It's damn near impossible to have a decent conversation on forums anymore because of this kind of "my opinion is fact" behavior.

reply

I would disagree, I've always liked The Munsters better. I enjoy both but they were monsters whereas the Addams Family were just odd. Plus I love Grandpa and Herman way more than annoying Uncle Fester and Gomez. The Munsters have a cooler car too.

reply

Not better, just different.

and BOTH very, very good!

Yes!

The Addams family bored me to death.

The Addams' Family was funny in its own right, it's just mainly to do with the way they SAY things, and deliver their lines, AND I thought their storylines were a little better thought out.

The Munsters were funny mainly b/c of the SHOCK value of their appearance.

Just because we lose today's battle doesn't mean we've lost tommorow's war.

reply

You make it sound like the Munsters cast had no nuance in their delivery of dialog.
What thought-out storylines in the Addams Family? Someone comes to the house for some reason, the family is acting loopy and somehow it's so maddening, the guests run out. Episode after episode.

reply

Well for one, I thought in the episode My Son the Chimp, about how they thought Pugsley was trapped in another dimension was kinda deep. Thats one that comes to mind.

The Addams just had an air of sophistication about them.

I liked the Munster but they got their laughes from just shock factor more.

Just because we lose today's battle doesn't mean we've lost tommorow's war.

reply

I don't know what you mean by shock factor when it comes to the Munsters. People's reaction to them? That pretty much the humor of the Addams Family. With the Munsters, it was verbal interplay and situations with each other and people outside the family which varied more than it did on the Addams Family. I'm not particularly impressed by the writing on the Addams Family, despite how "sophisticated" it's claimed to be.

I disagree. I have always liked The Munsters better. It was a show that I grew up with.

reply

No way! The Addams Family sucked compared to the Munsters. The Munsters you could relate to, but the Addams Family were mostly unlikable jerks, and NOT funny.

reply

The Munsters was better, I've watched both shows & the Munsters is just more fun & funnier because The Munsters you can relate to & connect with. They were a working middle class family with typical normal situations & problems. I saw The Munsters in primetime & I had a Munsters lunchbox in 1965. The Addams Family were strange & cooky & fun but lacked any elements of normality unlike The Munsters. The Addams Family was more sophisticated & stuck up & full of themselves which made them hard to relate to & connect with.

The Munsters ruled & is a much better show.

It's been a while since I've chimed in on this, but I liked The Munsters better simply because it was more flagrantly funny. The M's were not without repetitive humor, but the A's thrived on it one ep after another-- every one they would mention needing Lurch for something and within a few feet would be the hangman's noose they would 'ring' and Lurch would immediately appear and say, "Youuu rangggg?", and there would be that sound and Morticia would say "Ah! the mail's in" and 'Thing' would arise with the mail. Were we supposed to laugh at these every time, as the laugh track prompt us?

I suppose it comes down to: do you like satire [Addams Family] or spoof [Munsters]? For me, it's spoof, and therefore The Munsters.

reply

As a child, I was never afraid of Herman except when he turned into the hairy monster in the Zombo episode. On the other hand, I couldn't watch The Addams Family very much because Lurch gave me nightmares. He reminds me of today's Slender Man, who I find terrifying to look at as an adult.
