WHEN DID GOMER COME OUT OF THE CLOSET

i think it was LOVE LETTERS TO THE SARGE. obviously it was very blatant by the last season but sometimes its kind of uneasy to watch. perhaps that is why they brought in lou ann to get around the issue.

reply

How far did Gomer and Lou Ann go? Hand holding? Did they ever even kiss? Why did Gomer get so excited when he was in a restaurant with Lou Ann and Sgt. Carter walked in?

reply

a friend of mine along with myself are pyle addicts but you ask a good question i do not think gomer actually ever kissed lou-ann. ive seen lou-ann on gunsmoke before and she was HOT! after while gomer becomes so OUT it sometimes becomes embarrasing. in realty he would have been sent home

reply

Yeah, you're right. Lou Ann was really terrific looking. I always kind of wondered though why she settled for Gomer and then on Gunsmoke she was Festus' girlfriend...well sort of. She could have done so much better than a semi retarded Marine and a deputy who looked like he took a bath about once a year...LOL.

reply

Gomer did seem to have a gay fixation for Sgt. Carter. I don't remember which episode it was, but I remember Gomer wanted to be around Sgt. Carter the whole time and Sgt. Carter just wanted to find a woman to hook up with. I think it was when they went to Washington so Gomer could sing for the President because he won that contest.

reply

I think if Gomer would have had some kind of odd 'crush' on Sgt. Carter he would have also been jealous of Bonnie, Sgt. Carter's girlfriend. But he and Bonnie got along fine. Sure, Gomer wasn't close to being a playboy, but he didn't exactly swish around in women's clothes and hang around fag bars either.

reply

Plus he did get to kiss a beautiful woman who judo-flipped Sgt. Carter! That episode was hilarious!

"I'd be very happy to be myself if I could remember who I am. Who am I?"

reply

On September 20, 2011.

reply

gomer and the queen of burlesque. just look at his pained, stupid faces as the woman is doing her strip tease. its obvious he would rather be elsewhere. then a few eps later he is having the time of his life at the talentless drip jerry balls act. this stuff cant be faked.

reply

Lou Ann and Gomer kissed in the episode "The Better man" from season 4.

The kiss is at 2:08 mark.

You're missing the point. Gomer was a simple country bumpkin and in his culture you didn't kiss a girl unless you were wanting to marry her, (That was said on The GG show a million times) Sgt Carter was not a crush, but a father figure for gomer, who took Sgt Carter's yelling and abuse as his way of showing that he cared and wanted the best for his men. Gomer always saw the best in people.

reply

Gomer's fixation for the Sarge was intended for Gomer to be a very naive person seeking a mentor. Part of the humor was seeing Carter squirm as the non-wanting to be mentor. Carter always seemed interested in women. I really think CBS would have pulled the plug on GP if there was even less than an obvious homosexual bend to the show. I think the show would have been rejected by the intended audience (those preferring innocent humor) if they felt a homosexual vibe. The mentor aspect was off-putting anyways to a lot of people as a lot of people are uncomfortable around those they perceive as socially awkward. It would have been more tolerable if Gomer sought out others aside from the Sarge to be his social support. Sometimes they did this with Duke but the fact the producers had a nice highly rated (profitable) show with the existing cast they did not feel the need to address this issue.
I think in this day and age the public at large is uncomfortable with naive rural characters. Not everybody can be street saavy and not everybody learns the first time from a given mistake.

Why do trolls have to come on here and start stupid rumors? Pyle was never homosexual and had to fight the stereotype most of his career. He played his part in Gomer Pyle USMC perfectly, which was one of an innocent, lovable, sees good in everybody type of individual. On The Andy Griffith Show he was more of just a good ole country boy.

I do wish people would knock off the silly and worn out "Gomer is gay" nonsense...

reply

gomer certainly did displayed overt homosexual tendencies.

reply

^Yeah there was a little of that in this show for sure. I'm sure the writers were aware of it too because I really doubt the gay jokes in the episodes "Love Letters to the Sarge" and "Marriage, Sgt. Carter Style" were a coincidence. It was in good fun though and not meant to be taken seriously.

reply

I guess you might feel pretty silly about this post now. Oh well. Lesson: sometimes the rumors ARE actually true.

reply

G-o-l-l-y. Sur-prise, sur-prise, sur-prise. Not really.

Well said.

I've known for DECADES that Nabors was gay. The only thing that surprises me is how many people refused to accept it--until now, since he finally made it public by marrying his male partner.

The FACT that Jim Nabors is gay doesn't require trolls to start stupid rumors.

Pyle played the part? Um, no, Nabors played the part. Pyle fought the stereotype? Do you mean Gomer Pyle, the Marine, fought the stereotype during his Marine career? Or are you talking about Jim Nabors in his acting career?
I do wish people would knock off the silly and worn out "Gomer is gay" nonsense...
Well, again, we need to distinguish between the CHARACTER of Gomer Pyle who was a Marine and the ACTOR who played him, Jim Nabors. We don't know if Gomer Pyle was gay, but we do know that Jim Nabors is. Which do you mean?

When a person denies they are homosexual (as Jim Nabors did over the years) I give then the benefit of a doubt. It's as simple as that.

He has now he is homosexual so fine. That's his business. I guess people wanted me or others to accuse him of being something he denied. I guess we're not supposed to take people at their word anymore?

reply

I can't remember Jim Nabors ever being asked point blank in an interview if he was gay. Talk show hosts and the like just didn't do that until the late 1990's or so and even then (and now) it's considered pushing the envelope of invading a person's privacy.

On the other hand, a lot of people on this thread are obviously reading (previously unconfirmed) speculation about Jim Nabors into the character of Gomer. There is absolutely nothing gay about Gomer. CBS would have nipped that in the bud immediately if Jim was coming off too conspiciously gay given both the era and the generally conservative audience for the show. It's only natural Gomer would eventually get a girlfriend on the show. Lou Ann didn't come along to "disprove" Gomer was gay. The show ran what five or six years, there has to be some sort of romance for Gomer at some point.

Like many have said, Gomer's obsession with Sgt. Carter is not remotely sexual, he just considers him a leader/hero/mentor/good friend even if Carter doesn't exactly return the affection. Gomer is no more sexually drawn to Carter than he was for Andy or Barney, they are all just friends to pal around with for him.

I can see where modern audience might find Gomer's in-your-face chatterbox intensity less than masculine but this sort of character was something of a staple in comedy tv shows and old movies. Jerry Lewis played fairly similiar characters in a lot of movies in this period. That Jim Nabors never married (until recently of course ) has caused people to read more into the character than is there.

It was in 80's when he came out

When did Nabors DENY being gay? Unless you mean denying by omission, i.e., by not acknowledging that he was gay and simply saying nothing.
He has now he is homosexual so fine. That's his business. I guess people wanted me or others to accuse him of being something he denied. I guess we're not supposed to take people at their word anymore?
WHAT word? Again, I don't know of any instance when Nabors stated he wasn't gay, so I don't know what you're referring to.

Regardless, if you TRULY did not think Jim Nabors is gay until now...what can I say?! You've led a very sheltered life? Seriously, I'm in my 50s and I've known for as long as I can remember that he was gay. It didn't take him coming out of the closet for me to know.

Do you not check facts before posting? Jim Nabors never confirmed he was homosexual until this most recent incident. The scopes link below proves that Nabors had denied being homosexual up to this point. He might have been homosexual but he had never admitted it. So, I like to take people's word on what they say unless the evidence is overwhelming.

No, I don't "live a sheltered life" nor do I spread rumors about people w/o some proof. How would you like it if someone started spreading rumors about you of this sort?

On January 29, 2013 Hawaii News Now reported that Jim Nabors had married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at Seattle, Washington's Fairmont Olympic Hotel on January 15, 2013 a month after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington.
