I have a Fess Parker biography that paints him in a positive light, but you can still read between the lines. My impression is that he was a good guy, and that the majority of people who knew him liked and respected him. When he passed away there were a lot of fans with stories about how he would visit with customers at his winery, was humble, generous, and so on.
On the other hand, I've heard that he ruffled quite a few feathers with some unpopular real estate moves. He sounded like he could be obstinate and uncompromising on the business side of things, although his opposition still liked him on a personal level. While all accounts I've read indicate a family-like atmosphere on the Daniel Boone set, there's also been indications that not everyone who left did so of their own choosing.
Overall, the accounts I've read overwhelmingly suggest that he was one of the good guys.
